Remember the days when an OS was just an OS and not an active agent of company’s legal department?

I did. My desktop computer boots into Linux Mint as default, but I have Windows 7 as an option. All Windows “security” updates turned off, of course.

Waiting to buy a new computer until after the end of July, when the “free” Win 10 download ends. Will get Win 7 and use a different browser. Have no need for MS tracking my every thought and move.

The wife got me a really nice computer last month to replace my aging $150 E-Machine from Walmart. The new box is pre-loaded with Windows 7 Home Ultimate, but like you, I'm not connecting it to the internet until after July 29th, when the free Windows 10 thing is over.

From what I understand, W7 will still be getting security updates until January of 2020.

It gets worse by the day. These creeps basically want to enslave people (Microsoft, Google, Facebook, etc., ad nauseum).

"From what I understand, W7 will still be getting security updates until January of 2020." Thanks.
I'm getting pretty old.
That may be long enough for me.

Yes, it does. Run WireShark on a Windows 10 system and watch all the data being sent to a myriad of Microsoft servers. WireShark is a free download and is a primary tool used by network engineers and system administrators.

I run it on Windows 7 and I see it trying to talk to many IP addresses. There’s way too much traffic for an idling system.
