Thank God we didn't fight for the so called Loyalists in Spain. Those anti Franco Communist were disgusting human beings who took great pleasure in searching out, torturing and killing Catholic priest and defiling, raping and then murdering nuns. And yes Franco was no walk in the park either.
Hess didn’t take a dump without asking Hitler for permission. The only two who knew about the mission were Hitler and Hess.
But a neutral Spain was very useful during the war. Many Jews were saved by going through Spain.
Had Franco not won, Hitler probably occupies Spain.
I have no idea if it would have been true or not , but some have suggested having a neutral west would have helped avoid the Holocaust. I think Buchanan in one of his books is the most readily available proponent for this but the argument goes like this:
1) No occupation of the west in 1940, no Dutch, Belgium, French, Danish Jews rounded up and killed. The Dutch in particular lost something like 108,000 out of 116,000 Jewish citizens.
2) The very order for the Holocaust might not have been issued (unlikely I think). Argument goes the order dates from May~July of 1941, by which time Hitler had decided the problem between him and the west was the Jews, hence if he was going down so were they. Since the Wannsee conference was post Dec 7, by which time the Germans were halted on the east front an the US was in the war, might be possible. This idea is Hitler would have been content with the emigration of Jews out of German living space, as they did up to about 1940.
3) If the Holocaust had gone on as scheduled, at least in eastern Europe (my guess) then a fair number of Jews could have fled to the west, including Italy and the Balkans, as these regions likely would not have been drawn into the war (once again questionable).
4) The chief bloodshed would have been restricted to eastern Europe, a monumental showdown between the two great totalitarian powers.
Imagine if Britain and the US stayed out of WWI. Even in Germany won, so what? Would it have been that bad? I mean the French weren’t saints, neither. Germany didn’t want to take over the British Empire, they simply wanted their own. France had all of their colonies.
Franco was a saint in comparison; we acknowledged that when we later reached out to him to help contain communism (with bases in Spain). His speech at that time, in which he describes how only so late did we realize what he and the other generals were fighting against, sums it up well.
