Texas has confirmed that an infant who recently died in Harris County had microcephaly linked to the Zika virus. The baby passed away shortly after birth and is the first Zika-related death reported in Texas.

During her pregnancy, the mother was in Latin America, where she was infected, and the baby acquired the infection in the womb. Recent test results confirmed the baby's condition and link to Zika. The mother and baby are classified as travel-related cases, and there is no additional associated risk in Texas.

Last month Texas reported the state's first case of microcephaly linked to Zika, also a Harris County infant.

Texas has reported 97 cases of Zika virus disease, including the two infants with microcephaly from Harris County. All Texas cases are related to travel abroad to areas with active Zika transmission. There have been no reported cases of Zika virus disease transmitted by mosquitoes in Texas, but Texas is on alert for the possibility local transmission.

With its link to microcephaly, Zika poses a serious threat to unborn children. DSHS is tracking the number of pregnant women with Zika in the state, working with providers and reporting weekly data to the national Zika pregnancy registry. DSHS is studying past microcephaly data to understand the prevalence and patterns of this condition in Texas.

Sounds like many crossing the border for our wonderful health system. Oh and don’t forget lifetime disability payments for the American citizen child.

I don’t have any more sympathy left for those that rape and abuse our generous system.

“During her pregnancy, the mother was in Latin America, where she was infected, and the baby acquired the infection in the womb.”

Translation. As soon as the Central American knew she was knocked up, she made her illegal alien trip to drop an anchor baby here.

Thank you for the obvious translation, one that we will not be getting from the complicit MSM, who apparently are willing to let us all die in order to advance their leftist agenda.

And lying Ryan writes the blank checks. This is a government problem that invites illegals here, and they (government masters) know exactly what they are doing... Destroy us from within and call it charity. This is how ‘social justice’ works. Cantorize lying, ‘social justice’ con man, Ryan, Wisconsin.

97 cases? It’s only a matter of time before it enters the local mosquito population.

If a non-Zika carrying mosquito bites someone carrying Zika can it then transmit the virus to another individual when it bites them?

Yes.

http://www.cdc.gov/zika/vector/range.html

And:
http://www.cdc.gov/zika/transmission/index.html

Through mosquito bites
Zika virus is transmitted to people primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito (Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus). These are the same mosquitoes that spread dengue and chikungunya viruses.

These mosquitoes typically lay eggs in and near standing water in things like buckets, bowls, animal dishes, flower pots and vases. They prefer to bite people, and live indoors and outdoors near people.
Mosquitoes that spread chikungunya, dengue, and Zika are aggressive daytime biters, but they can also bite at night.
Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on a person already infected with the virus. Infected mosquitoes can then spread the virus to other people through bites.

Yes according to the CDC: Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on a person already infected with the virus. Infected mosquitoes can then spread the virus to other people through bites.

Here's the tiniest of brains in Houston who once whined there were no black universities in Texas when there are 9 with 2 outside her office window including one that dates back to 1876. And whined "don't you know who I am" to a flight attendant demanding an upgrade to first class:

And you wonder why so many third world diseases tend to pop up in Houston.

Good question and the answer is probably maybe. The CDC recently had to admit you can get it by having sex with a Zika infected person.

Everytime I think about changing my tagline, some other third world disease pops up.

Most ot the Brazil emphasis has been on eradicating Aedes aegypti - as the previously known Zika carrier.
Now, the investigative direction is aimed at another mosquito , Culex quinquefasciatus where it was recently learned as a Zika virus carrier
( which is 20 times more common than Aedes aegypti in Brazil).
So we are learning more each day about the carriers, and the effects of the Zika Virus on fetus development, and how it is transmitted.
Yes, right now it is believed that the virus is able to be transmitted among various mosquito species.

We were fortunate to have drought conditions in the northeast this year. Next year, especially if we have a mild winter, we may see this virus explode in multiple mosquito populations.

trisham :" We were fortunate to have drought conditions in the northeast this year."

I recall during some research that Aedes aegypti has the previously been found in Conn.
I don't recall if it was an isolated discovery, or not, just that it has been found there.
It may have been transported by ship transport, so it may have just been an isolated incident.
The Aedes aegypti found in the Washington DC, three blocks from the White House, was in a birdbath and had been found there for three successive years
