When I was in the Peace Corps in Thailand (’77 - ‘79), the government promoted the eating of field rats. Saw quite a few grilled rats for sale here and there.

Yep. I went into the rice fields and beat the stalks(?) and ran the rats out in front where the people gathered them in burplap bags. I never witnessed how they killed them, but the whole village (just outside of Phuket) all sat down and had a Thanksgiving-like feast. When I saw the bamboo sticks over the hibachi’s in the village we always stopped and bought one or two. Some of my felloe soldiers would NOT eat rat. Some would not eat goat. Venison.
