A draw.
9/26/2016 | By Laz A. Mataz

A draw. No major knockout on either side. Trump stood up for himself when necessary. I don't think it will move the needle, and Krauthammer made a good observation: Draws usually go to the challenger, and that is Donald Trump.

If I were to advise Trump, it would consist of the following:

1) Complete your sentences. You are giving the audience too much credit for figuring out what you mean when you shoot off two or three words.

2) Stop repeating the same point 5 or 6 times. You are wasting time.

3) Speak less to broad concepts and more to the common man.

4) Affability matters. Reagan won on affability. Smile a little more, but not with that forced weird smile Hillary plastered on most of the debate. Also, an affable Reaganesque "There you go again"-style phrase, queued up and ready to go when appropriate, would work wonders.

5) Next time, don't leave those hanging slow pitches unswatted. For example, when Hillary talks about your charity, mention her Clinton Foundation that only gives out 6% of it's money to charitable works. Also, speak more about how Hillary is the DC Establishment, and you are there to challenge that. Many people will identify that as a key takeaway.

On the whole I give Hillary high marks, and Trump close but not as good. Stylistically Hillary did very well, but in content Trump nailed it a few times.

However, he needs to take a reality check and prepare more in a structured debate setting. Obama had a HORRIBLE first debate and came back strong. Trump wasn’t horrible, but he needs to come back strong. I know he can do it.

I don’t know why people consider someone being a slick talker a good thing in a candidate.

I don't either, but I was viewing this with an eye towards the Low Information Voter, who loves a slick talker.

Yup.

She also used some cheap psychological tricks, like laughing whenever he was done making a point and making bald-faced lies about his comments and positions.

She made me want to shove her smug face in.

I watched most of the debate, and I thought Trump did what he had to, he wiped the floor up with her...

He was on point, he said what he had to, and he was prepared...

He isn't a ‘polished politician’ that has spent 40 years of his life lying...and there was a few things he could have done differently, but he stood up not only to ROTTEN but her puppet also...

TRUMP WON TONIGHT...AMERICA WON ANOTHER ROUND TONIGHT!!!

Trump spent too much time responding to petty attacks instead of using the time to attack Hillary Clinton on her serious crimes.

He defended himself against charges he called a woman a name instead of using that opportunity to bring up how Hillary’s husband raped women and Hillary attacked the rape victims. He defended himself against not disclosing a tax return instead of attacking Hillary on the Clinton Foundation. There were a bunch of these.

Trump could also spend more time describing the details of the crimes or incompetence. He did some of that tonight. But Trump is a bottom-line guy and often has a tendency to just characterize the outcome — worst deal ever, Iran was a disaster, etc. Don’t just label it - explain in more detail why it was a disaster and educate the masses.

Hillary should have been destroyed but she survived to fight another day.

My question is did he come across as a bully? Even a little?

Not even slightly. On that point, he walked a very fine line VERY successfully. He attacked her, without a single talking head being able to talk about 'bullying'. The win here goes to The Donald.

I did NOT like his answer about gun bans for the Terrorist Watch List

I understand and agree. In a normal world where a government has not been weaponized against it's citizens, only the truly deserving would end up on this list (4th amendment).

In a Hillary world, all dissenters would somehow make their way on the 'list'.

In the end, with a Trump administration, this wouldn't happen. I look at this as one way to disarm or take away an argument the left uses. Trump tying his answer to the NRA makes it appear like a reasoned response.

I think Trump lost out on an opportunity with the black communities and could have swerved to education and returning to the states and school choice. Otherwise, it's gotta be tough standing next to someone spewing so many lies.

“it was the only time I felt moved.”

So are you still undecided between Trump and Hillary?

If you are voting for Trump I’d say he acomplished his mission. He wasn’t there to do anything else.

Very good analysis, Laz.

He probably did the best he could under terrific duress—100 million people, an audience of tittering university children unchecked by the moderator(!) and an opponent who is the smarmiest schoolyard bully who ever lived!

But he will be calmer next time, for sure. I knew she’d be a pro...she had her friends in the audience, the moderator, the notes on her podium. Her one liners were delivered with practiced ease. Reminds me of being the only anti-socialist student in my ivy league college classes. Not fun. Hillary is that girl who’d turn around and snarl, “How can you say that? No one believes that anymore!”

A draw! Donald Trump first time debater held his own. I filled in the crooked Hillary for him from time to time. Maybe Mr. Trump could use the word “twisted” to soften what she truly is.

Remember, Killary is the one who needs to Knock Trump out.

And She didn't do it.

She Failed.

Trump is Washington and Killary the Redcoats.

Like Washington he fights, withdraw, fights withdraw, Attacks, Attack again, Withdraw.

He Doesn't need a Crushing Victory to Win.

She Does.

She has to have a victory of annihilation. He just has to not loose like Washington did.

She failed to do that tonight.

Its like this, if you want a lying career politician who goes around talking about how they know EVERYTHING but they leave bodies behind everywhere they go, then yeah go for Hillary Clinton..but if you want someone who CARES about PEOPLE and wants to make AMERICA better for EVERYONE go with Trump..I think he did fine, he could have done better, gone for the jugular, mentioned the Clinton Foundation, Haiti(They are STILL waiting for their money), Benghazi, that would have been PERFECT but for whatever reason he decided not to bring it up
