Here's the killer question Cruz asked:

That question, which Cruz had to ask twice:

"Is ICANN bound by the First Amendment?"

Mr. Marby initially replied:

"I think you know the answer to that question."

Sen. Cruz tried again:

"I'm asking you for your views."

Mr. Marby's blunt response:

"To my understanding, NO."

That is all that many Americans need to know.

Grateful that so many here care about this real issue.
For the few who foolishly dismiss the threat, please note high level military and security experts who protested to halt giveaway of Internet control:

“A coalition of 77 national security, cybersecurity and industry leaders wrote a letter to Defense Secretary Ash Carter and Gen. Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, just days ago asking for intervention.

“As individuals with extensive, first-hand experience with protecting our national security, we write to urge you to intervene in opposition to an imminent action that would, in our judgment, cause profound and irreversible damage to the United States’ vital interests,” the letter said.

“Indeed, there is, to our knowledge, no compelling reason for exposing the national security to such a risk by transferring our remaining control of the Internet in this way at this time. In light of the looming deadline, we feel compelled to urge you to impress upon President Obama that the contract between NTIA and ICANN cannot be safely terminated at this point.”

The signers included former Assistant Secretary of Defense Frank Gaffney Jr., former Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence Lt. Gen. William “Jerry” Boykin (Ret.), former Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl, former Director of the Defense Nuclear Agency Vice Adm. Robert Monroe (Ret.) and former Chief Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Andrew McCarthy, among others.

They warned: “In the absence of U.S. government involvement in IANA, it seems possible that, over time, foreign powers – including potentially or actually hostile ones – will be able to influence the IANA process. Even coercing the delay in approving IP addresses could impact military capabilities. From a broader view, given the well-documented ambition of these actors to restrict freedom of expression and/or entrepreneurial activity on the Internet, such a transfer of authority to ICANN could have far-reaching and undesirable consequences for untold numbers of people worldwide.”

We are now reduced to lawsuits. We should have done a better job of informing ourselves in advance, then informing the public, then leading a call to impeach Obama for this High Crime.

OLSR

Freifunk

The two links above take you to software packages that implement distributed mesh networks that can operate off your standard Windows/Linux machines to establish city wide networks using WiFi. A little extra effort is required to link mesh networks together. You may have to construct a local DNS from the standard "bind" software found on Linux or hack together something on Windows using ActiveDirectory to support your DHCP and LDAP databases to re-integrate your local area. If an EMP, war or financial collapse take down the internet on a world-wide basis, you can cobble up sufficient infrastructure with Linux and these mesh networks to re-establish some level of "normal" in your city or region.

I used OLSR to create a rolling mesh network with 802.11b devices on each railcar. A train wrapped around a mountain that lacks line of sight from car to car will have a good mesh path using OLSR. I chose OLSR because it constantly updates routes and minimizes latency to transmit a data packet. That was crucial to my system design. The alternative AODV using by Freifunk minimizes transmitter on time by performing route discovery only when it is time to move a packet. That introduces latency for route discovery, but reduces power consumed and over the air bandwidth required to continually update the connectivity maps.

I stopped doing daily work with OLSR in 2009 when Obama's arrival trashed my program finances. The OLSR2 work started after that point in time, so I don't have much "hand's on" with that one.

It is exactly this kind of information control that Putin has been putting in place for the past decade. I just don’t understand why Trump thinks Putin is such a great guy. How does he plan to free up public information if he becomes president?

Thank you for the update.

Oh well, at least I have a clean conscience on this.

When our stolen property is in the wind we just need to trust in God.

FRegards ....
