Ashton Brooks, a senior placekicker for the Dow football team in Midland, Michigan, is the number one kicker in her conference. She has also received a partial college scholarship to Northwood University for her skills in soccer as well as a partial academic scholarship. She also has a great singing voice and is on the Dow basketball team.
But despite her success, she is being mocked for her race. New York Daily News justice writer Shaun King tweeted out a picture of the now-deleted Instagram post showing a white female student posing with someone in a gorilla suit that is identified as Brooks, writing, “When a young Black girl is the #1 football kicker in her conference, here’s what happens.”

Isn’t that the truth? Very pretty, infectious smile, champion kicker and a great singer. I wouldn’t be surprised if she has a 4.0, too.

The internet is ALWAYS a national story. Journalists don’t investigate anymore, they just cull the web for crud to put on the air and in the paper.
Yes, she did.
I don’t see the racism. I see a very pretty, athletic girl who plays football and apparently does it well. I see a blonde high school girl in a picture with someone in a gorilla suit. I see a caption that someone (not necessarily the blonde girl) inserted, probably out of irritation that a girl helped a rival to beat their football team. Nothing more.
It’s not unusual to compare an athlete of any race to a gorilla. The comparison is not racist, just being a poor loser. It wasn’t racist when they compared George W. Bush to a chimpanzee either.
Muhammad Ali referred to Joe Frazier as a "Gorilla."
What, Shaun King racist against blacks? Say it isn’t so.
That’s what I got from it too. Some folks are too quick on the draw about Trigger Words, when the speaker may not have meant it that way at all. Athletes are often compared to strong, wild graceful animals who are at the top of their form.
