Thanks for all the photos. We have set a record for rainfall in the month of Oct of 7.81” with 3 days to go. Tomorrow is Lady Bender’s birthday so I told her she could have half the day off
Yep, he was out in the thick of it, and in the middle of the road, felt he had to keep going or risk being hit by a car driven by someone who couldn’t see very good.
I like the Autumn...but then Winter shows up too soon!
That is understandable. At my age, there is no way, I’d ever go back to S. Dakota or any other state that had winters like that.
I don’t go out doors here if there is the slightest bit of slick - don’t want to risk falling. Bones are too brittle.
Great Grandma, Grandma, and Father all suffered falls and broken hips. Spent the rest of their days laid up in wheelchairs or beds.
If you can keep the lemon alive all winter, that’ll be quite an accomplishment! It will probably go dormant with 40 degree days/night, but I wouldn’t panic.
Don’t fertilize, but keep it watered and keep the humidity up all winter...which might mean daily attention.
Yeah...Mom had her share of slips and falls too.
Re: Tomatoes not blooming/fruiting. Could be the night time temps. IIRC, they have to have 50s at night to do that.
LOL!
Wisconsin has had a really wet season, too! We had 8” of rain in September and 4” of rain in October - unheard of!
I am SO hoping the weather pattern changes before the snow flies...or it’s going to be a LOT of snow this winter!
Then I lined the driveway with pots. This is all that's left after summer heat took a lot out but it shows how I figured out how to garden when I can't get *to* the garden.
Two birthdays in a row. My sweetie is enjoying his birthday cake today that I finally got done last night. I hope you have made Lady Bender’s cake as well? Hmmm????
I’m not sure my Mr. got time off. He *took* the day off today but he’s made it a gun cleaning day and is still at it.
My husband likes Autumn. He lived in Maine until he was almost 40 and says that autumn is the only nice season up there. I’ve been beset by allergies in this season all my life and unfortunately I think he has succumbed to them as well. Last night he closed the windows and turned the a/c back on :(
That's the challenge. We are definitely not in a humid part of Texas. We get humidity during floods and that's about it.
Just keep those rocks covered in water every day; evaporation will help with the humidity - and you can also mist your lemon tree DAILY with a spray bottle of water.
And I agree with the other poster - it’s too cool at night for your indoor peppers or tomatoes to set fruit - they need to never fall below 50 degrees for that.
Mother Nature can only be fooled so far for so long. ;)
I do my overwintered nightshades like most winterized plants. Don’t feed and just water to keep from wilting. Feed about mid-February when it’s starting to feel springish and start treating them like fresh plants and usually get nice new growth. Peppers always have better crops in years 2 and 3. Tomatoes usually only go 2 years but the 2nd year I usually get more better bigger tomatoes than the first.
I’ve always kept 3 or 4 of each in pots and brought them in. I’ve just never done it on this scale before. And, I am not quite certain they are all going to have room in the house. I am certain my husband is going to mention that I should not bring them all in.
I had a portable greenhouse that fit on the deck with the lemon and hybiscus until winter before last. I have mentioned that I need a new one for this Christmas :)
You’re one of us.
LOL - Rocks wont be coming in. That pot has to stay out on the deck. I’ve got an old birdbath with a raised center for the lemon tree inside. I’ve used it in the past for airplane plants but I’ve set up some other stacked trays for some of them now.
When the tomatoes bloom and set in the winter they are up on a glassed-in balcony that’s heated by the central heat in the house. From what I’ve seen their resting period is more determined by the number of hours in the day. They get full sun for almost all the daylight hours up there but the days just get too short. I have some grow lights that I used to use in my greenhouse but I don’t want to put them up on a 2nd story glassed in balcony because I don’t want the people that live in the houses on the other side of the gulch to have to see that light all night. (We already had some people from the city buy nearby a few years back who think they need to keep their place lit like a football field)
The plants need to rest anyway since I do put them out to produce in 2 or 3 succeeding years. In past years when I was able they did very when I planted the 2 or 3 second year tomatoes that I had in the ground. They were typically my best spring tomatoes. I have read all my life that plants don’t do well like that but had an old guy tell me to do this back in the 70’s.
I came back from Maine with a horrible cold! I thought at first it was allergies, or dust from the wood stove, or the chickens in the yard, but I am home now and it has not gone away. Oh Well. Time to get some ZICAM and Chicken Soup!
Beautiful.
