freerepublic | Oct 28, 2016 | greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest.

Jump in and join us! NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Greetings Gang. What a beautiful day we have had here in Missouri. Sun shine and shirt sleeve weather. I didn't get to get out in it till later in the day, but I did take a stroll around the perimeter of our little Acre, as well as visits to several garden patches and the persimmon tree.

We are supposed to have a great weekend ahead, so I am going to make it a point to just get out and enjoy the sunshine. Do a little clean up work on the patio and simply sit and drink some tea and catch up on a little reading.

Found a perfect persimmon - am getting better and better at choosing them first thing. What a great dessert. I did try persimmon jelly once, but if they aren't perfect, just one can ruin the batch. I have a recipe for some persimmon candy that I'm going to try sometime or other, now that I'm getting better at choosing.

Gathered a handful of cherry tomatoes, and ate half with supper. Have enough endive to get a small salad, so will harvest that maybe tomorrow. Hubby has been picking up the walnuts, and working on getting his patches ready to plant cover crop - winter rye and vetch this year.

Hope you are all doing well. Prayers up for all. Have a great weekend. God Bless.

Finally had to transplant my pot bound mini tree in real dirt rather than leaving it in a pot. Hopefully now it’ll start stretching out. That was one tight root ball.

Pinging the List. Where or Where did October go? It seems like the first was just a couple of days ago! Trick or Treat should be a treat this year - mild temps and no rain in the forecast.

We replanted watermelons. Eight hills of them. They’ve sprouted but the vines are not very big

“Where, Oh, Where did October go?”

For me, up here on The Frozen Tundra, it’s been all about the Kale and putting up Spaghetti Squash and Honeynut Butternut Squashes.

That’s all that’s left, aside from one lonely cucumber still on the kitchen counter, LOL!

Mom and I had a wonderful time last weekend hitting Peck’s, which is our local HUGE Farm Market. We petted and fed all sorts of farm critters (I’m pretty sure I NEED a Pot-Bellied Pig in my life and some Angora Goats or Angora Rabbits for yarn!) and we bought all kinds of apples, honey, cider, pumpkins, etc. It. Was. Heaven. :)

I’ve recently figured out how to post pictures, so I’ll post a few of my previous gardening exploits and my current LAME garden - but remember - this is my FIRST YEAR HERE, so I’m forgiven; I did the best I could with what Beau gave me to work with. He’s PROMISED me more raised beds this coming Spring.

Well keep us posted - I will be living vicariously by reading posts from other locals once winter hits.

Being the end of October I guess I’ll have to see what it does in the spring.

I am looking forward to seeing your pictures. I managed to post some of mine a long long time ago with help from my daughter. Tried a couple of times to do it myself, after that but, never was able to do it, as spending hours on it was just frustrating.

My current printer doesn’t have a scan feature, and the pics I’ve taken recently didn’t turn out very well anyway.

I vote for both - goats would also give you milk, and those rabbits could give you great fertilizer. LOL

Growing season over in the NE is over, though we have yet to go below freezing. But the butternut squash (planted about 2'' high from pots in late May) grew pretty well despite less than 6 hours of sun most of summer. I thin i counted about 30 of various sizes. And a fair amount of tomatoes also, glory to God.

Strange. The image is smaller and vertical when viewed on my PC. Try not to crank your neck too much!

No doubt about it. My lemon tree is already protesting the move indoors, by dropping leaves, I’ll need to give it some nutrients soon. Now that it gets dark so early, I’ll soon be turning on the grow light, so I need to get some indoor pots of other stuff started.

Nice Pics. Thanks for sharing. Tomatoes look pretty good still. My bucket tomatoes are not going to be good enough to bring indoors, but I’m going to try to get one of the cherry tomatoes rooted and brought in.

Nice looking puppy. Should help keep the critters away maybe. I know my Daisy kept all scavengers away from my lemon tree on the patio. This year, without her, I lost two lemons to the thieving little furry tailed rodents.

Beau added a few scoops of our homemade compost to these beds so I could do fall plantings of lettuces, spinach, peas, etc. Chief, our Beagle, moved in. Rolled around and tilled in a lot of it for me; Good Dog!

After a gorgeous (but dry!) Summer, and a short pretty autumn, it is now WINTER in New England. Brrrrr
