Elvis was great, America was great - the best decades to be a young American from 1956 to 1976. Too soon, we lost Elvis and our sense of joy.

My brother as an intern for Geraldino Ferraro, around 1982, back when she was just a congresswoman. He worked in constituent services, which mostly involved sending boilerplate letters in response to constituent letters. Occasionally there was some scope for originality. He actually got to draft an original letter. To wit:

Dear Mrs. Bultacho,

Elvis Presley was a great American and made many valuable contributions to American music and entertainment. I will give HR-82-205, making his birthday a national holiday, the serious and thorough attention it deserves.

Sincerely,

Geraldino F. Ferraro
Congresswoman, New York 5th Congressional District

Elvis ended himself....I am a great fan but after reading the 2 huge biographies of him...I feel for him and yet am angry...He didn’t have to self destruct.
