I never gave this enough thought until I married a man who spent 20 years working as a commercial fisherman in Maine. Each time we travel to Maine to visit the kids we spend time at one or two of the Memorial sites on the Maine coast. Indeed, this is a somber time of memorial.

I was on foot in downtown Port Huron, Michigan in the summer of 1974 when the drawbridge over the Black River went up. I stood there and after a minute or too the Edmund Fitzgerald rolled past. A companion told me, “That's the biggest ship on the lake right now.” In those days I was bumming around the country and didn't catch a lot of news. The next time I heard about the Edmund Fitzgerald was when Gordan Lightfoot’s song came out two years later.

One of my favorite bits from a definite favorite radio personality was Tommy Mischke’s interview with a documenter of “The Mystery of the Edmund Fitzgerald”. Go to 7:40 to hear the original interview where Tommy sang the questions, then back to the beginning to hear his retrospective explanation of the experience.

For further delving into this modern presenter of Golden Age Radio, check out www.mischkemadness.com and their plethora of audio archives. Mischke was an amazing interviewer, brilliantly clever mind, surprisingly wonderful musician and thoroughly quick-witted storyteller (which you would have to be for a live call-in radio show)...almost a cross between The Onion and Robin Williams.

That was 1975. In 2016 it was the “Witch of November” that went under.
