CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Twelve passengers were killed when an elementary school crashed on Monday, CBS Chattanooga affiliate WDEF reported.
Chattanooga Police Chief Fred Fletcher said 35 students were on board on the bus, according to WDEF. The Chattanooga Fire Department’s Public Information Director, Bruce Garner, said in a tweet that 23 patients were taken to hospitals in ambulances.
Colonel Tracy Trott of the Tennessee Highway Patrol tweeted that children were both killed and injured:

What a nightmare. Just so sad.

Someone tell me again why school buses don’t have seat belts?

Absolutely sad, prayers up for those who died and those injured.
That being said, I’m willing to bet the driver was speeding. School Bus Drivers think they are above the law when they drive, illegally blocking intersections and speeding like there is no tomorrow. I’ve been passed by a school bus and I was going 15 over the speed limit.
Unimaginably sad, prayers for all involved.

Because they are more dangerous and seriously impede evacuation especially with a group of very young kids. In all but the most insane crashes, the tall padded seats and the mass of the bus are protection enough.
In the nightmare wrecks where there is catastrophic damage, as I suspect this was, they won’t help.
Its been well studied a hundred times.

Looking at the photos, this is a bizarre accident.
In a residential neighborhood, the bus appears to have gone sideways into a tree, cutting the bus almost in half.

It appears that seat belts would have prevented some of the injuries, but would not likely have eliminated some deaths where the tree penetrated the body of the bus.

Multiple fatalities are involved in this bus crash. However, contrary to media reports, no firm numbers have been confirmed yet. #ChattFire
Prayers for family and friends and those recovering. LORD be with them all.

Looks like the driver didn’t take a turn wide enough, and hooked a tree with the side of the bus.
THESE ARE THE THINGS THAT WE CAN NOT UNDERSTAND ON THIS SIDE OF HEAVEN.
PRAYERS FOR THE FAMILIES.
So call the admin of the school, most have camera equipment that records such things.
Or it didn’t happen
