I adore those granddaughters and even paid their tuition to private Christian schools but they've been tainted by the culture and their dad's leftist family, though I doubt if he even bothered to register, much less vote!
We’ve had the same argument here at my sister-in-law’s house.
There is a time and a place for everything, and that was not the time or place for that.
We had the post-election “talk” right afterwards. Nothing left to say. Not one political word or sentence was uttered. I did, however, keep my car keys handy lest a rapid exit was required.
No, the family we spent Thanksgiving with was the smart ones lol!
My in laws are Reagan democrats, that never went back. Another M-I-L that lives local gets invited is a classic southern democrat. She supports the democrats no matter what, and is a complete racist. One glass of wine and we all wait for her to say something impolite. Not sure how that all balanced out with voting for Obama.

My brother came in with his girls, the oldest is a senior in high school and they usually live with their liberal mother creature and the oldest brought up the BLM thugs and the oppression of blacks and their reasonable violent response to my sister. I started to unload on the girl and my wife makes eye contact and the facial expression of YOU HOLD YOUR TONGUE!
Without batting an eye my sister said ok say I accept your premise that BLM has all these righted to loot, burn, assault and kill. Answer me this do you support women’s rights? Yes she said! Then my sister says women have been through history raped, beaten, sold as slaves and still sold as sex slaves by people and parties you support, is this wrong? The oldest girl says yes!!!! My sister then says by your reasoning we women should be out killing all men white, black, Asian whatever shouldn’t we? The girl had a blank expression of this does not compute. My response was AMEN!!! From across the room.
After a minute or two to recover the young girl started the gay marriage and gay lifestyle is fine crap and my sister destroyed her again and left her stuttering. My brother, her dad just looked at me and grinned, he was loving another woman destroying all his estranged wife’s idiocy.
I have always been the political one in our family and I wanted to say to my sister you have done well young grasshopper!

Yes. Trumpsgiving! Daughter’s new bf is an enthusiastic conservative. Son’s new bride’s Dad was on Team Jeb(!) She voted for DJT. There was some conversation on Jeb’s candidacy and his future. At some point I said Please clap. The devil made me do it.
I have a very, very large extended family and they all come to my home in the Philadelphia suburbs for Thanksgiving - some even from SF and LA.
I’m happy to report that none of the liberals were obnoxious or outspokenly anti Trump and we returned the favor, although there were a few “happy Trumps-giving” greetings.
We had one gay cousin in law kid from NYC theatre scene that might have made one of those passive aggressive comments about “everyone having a tough couple of weeks”. Everyone ignored him.
I had a great one-on-one conversation with my step son from SF who is bombarded with FB and real life friends who are rabidly anti Trump. He is amazingly open minded considering who he is surrounded by. He asked me how he is supposed to rebut things like “this video of one of Trump’s cabinet picks who is an alt right leader - it shows him making white supremacist comments and people are saying hiel hitler and hail trump.”
I said - let me see that video. Turns out it was Richard Spencer, so I explained he is not a Trump staff pick, and Trump has zero to do with the guy. My step son was really appreciative of the chance to see how the fake news is fabricated. I really appreciated the rate opportunity to set the record straight.
I also have some kids who will never vote for anyone unless his name is Ron Paul. They are very, very well informed and articulate about Liberty, the constitution and their conservative principles - which they learned from me - I don’t agree with their conclusion not to cite for Trump, but they are never disrespectful, always a pleasure to debate with and to their credit, they were happy for me that my guy won - brought tears to my eyes.
There were a couple young daughter-in-laws who I think voted Clinton for the stupidest reason of all - to break the glass ceiling - but they kept their mouths shut.
Last but not least my wife and my siblings who were solid Trump fans all along. We had s few quiet toasts.
All in all very nice Thanksgiving.

I’m all for it! AFTER we deport the tens of millions of illegals then the Dems will never win again... EVER.
This year it was just my immediate family. No political discussions whatsoever. My husband put on our own little Simpsons marathon while I cooked and started off dinner with a wonderful prayer. Discussions were just about how delicious everything was.
I don’t slow communists in my house period. Liberals, progressives, communists, tree huggers .... they get the boot. Life is short so leve them out. No quarter no prisoners no invite. If there were any at the house they kept their mouth shut. I have no problem sayin get the hell out. I will say we did only have 16 people this year.

I’m sorry. I wish your mom hadn’t felt so desperate and now probably invested in this jerk. Women need to feel strong enough to not cling to idiots when their new flame is seen to be one. Best to back up and be alone than to feel stuck to some guy whom your kids do not even like.
