I use GPS (dedicated device and phone) but absolutely need to do map recon with real paper maps before I set out on any major trip. I don’t know how anyone can navigate based on a tiny 5” window view of a small portion of their route without seeing the big picture first.

Yes, me, too. Too many times I have needed to go off “grid” of my Nuvi due to weather, accidents or other things like fires. And, many people don’t know, but GPS doesn’t work everywhere, either.

When I take a long trip with anticipated off road adventures, I take topomaps. Of course I take my little compass, etc.

I am not a “mountain woman” for sure, but I just can’t stand not knowing where I am and what the weather is doing.

Somehow 900 miles on Route I-95 does just fine...20 Minutes to the Interstate and about 40 minutes on the other end. I turn the GPS on just because I have it, I guess. Miles to the next exit has been useful for planning stops though.

Yes, I do have a paper map saved in case there is a big detour.

If the grid is down or country in upheaval what good would it do to try to escape...to what worse spot? Shelter in place for me!
