At first there would be few defections and if the military were used to quell the populace that situation would not last. Commanders would have to start shooting deserters they catch in earnest pour encourager les autres. Both sides would degenerate to totalist tactics in short order. I don't think the military would be called in but would rather be posted offshore as much as possible. For leftists using the military domestically is playing with fire. The Soviets had homogenous minority units and could send the Uighurs to quell the Czechs and Magyars. Great Russians and East Europeans weren't trusted to do the job. Our military is too integrated to use those tactics without long term reorganization.
