If you go look at the final vote counts of those states, they did close the lead considerably from where they were late that night.

An 11,000 vote win in Michigan is well within the possibility of Detroit absentees and provisionals, in fact it got down to 11,000 from about 50,000 as a result of those.

And keep in mind one very important fact. The states have different rules on absentees. Some allow absentee ballots arriving AFTER election day (but postmarked by election day) to be counted. They know how many absentee ballots they sent out to voters requesting them. They can’t know how many will come back. But if the number they sent out and not yet returned exceeds the current lead, then one cannot reasonably “call it”.

They are able to project the results. If they were able to say Romney lost Ohio early on Election night in 2012, then after a couple of days they could have said MI was Trump or PA by midnight.
