I recently came across a quote from John Adams in his Defense of the Constitutions of Government of the United States of America:

"A people will never oppress themselves, or invade their own rights; but if they trust the arbitrary will of a body or succession of men, they trust enemies."

When meeting in their sovereign capacity, no people in history ever sold themselves into slavery. Fact.
