A teenager armed with a baseball bat who tried to stop the Melbourne car rampage says he's not a hero because he couldn't save the five people who died.

Tevita Mahina, 17, was filmed running into the middle of the road outside Flinders Street Station as Dimitrious Gargasoulas, 26, drove screeching doughnuts around the busy intersection.

Moments later, the crazed driver sped down Bourke Street mall mowing down dozens of pedestrians, killing five people and injuring 37 others.

'I didn't save anyone so I don't feel like a hero,' he told Daily Mail Australia after the video of his actions on Friday went viral on social media.

'The ones who attended to the victims are the heroes. I'd do it again in a heartbeat but I regret not doing more to drop him.

'I wish I could have stopped him, look at the five who have passed away I hope their loved ones are ok and they will be in my prayers.'

The 17-year-old said he was in the city with some friends and brought a bat and ball to hit around when they saw the car with its driver yelling 'f*** the world' and branded those watching 'sheep'.

I understand his feelings, but this young man (and his friend Isaac Tupou) acted when hundreds of others were standing around watching. He did what he could - but there are limits to what you can do in such a situation.

I want to make sure he gets acknowledged for standing up and moving in.

I’m surprised the Australian police don’t have this young man up on charges for a disturbing display of masculinity and public responsibility.

That’s him. And, no, he doesn’t. But by his name and appearance, he’s some sort of Pacific Islander and they often grow up fast and they grow up big. I teach teenage boys and it astonishes me to see the kids from there at times compared to their classmates.

By his name and looks, some sort of Pacific Islander. Could be Samoan, but equally could be Tongan, Fijian, or plenty of other places too.

Yea, figured. I’m not as well versed in all of the people of the Pacific.

But I do know every Samoan I ever met was at full maturity young and usually very big.

Nah Kid you was a hero regardless of the outcome- Heroes run TOWARDS danger, not away- everyone else just stood around- you did not- Accept it the appreciation and recognition on behalf of all of us who didn’t have the guts to do what you did-

That’s the only thing I would ever ask the Lord for on my behalf, to fortify me at such time as I’m called to step up to the plate.

That kid nutted up. He stepped in without regard for life and limb. He doesn’t think it, but it’s probably without a doubt that merely the time he tied the guy up saved at least some additional significant injuries and probably lives. He rocks, he made a large deposit at the bank of badass.
