They don’t do a true fast. They just don’t eat between sunup and sundown mecca time. So maybe they just skip lunch and then gorge themselves stupid after dark.
Saudis have some of the highest diabetes rates in the world because they pound down sweet drinks in a hot climate with alcohol prohibition.

To get information about how to do fasting the right way check out Dr. Jason Fung. He is curing Type 2 diabetes with fasting coupled with low-carb diet.
Dr. Thomas Seyfried recommends a 7-day water fast to clear out cancer cells, a process known as autophagy.

They only fast from dawn to sunset; this is not fasting in the sense of the article.

They eat after sundown so it’s not an all day fast.

The fasting used in this study was a specific type, not similar to various type of religious fastng.

Don’t know about diabetes in Muslims (or even other societies where they consume less junk than we do) but some Christians use fasting as an avenue toward compliance with God - seems like it may have some healthy effects.
