Were they singing, “Dead cat in the middle of the road”?

I’ve turkey hunted since 1967

More turkeys today than ever

My boys are tired of shooting them off our ten acres

I have a record size chinkapin oak out front...450 years old nearly 200 foot span and 100 plus foot high

One of the largest known to be honest......I’m not joking it’s been measured and is largest in the state but I never registered because ....long story

Anyhow....it’s a roosting heaven.....owls in summer....50-100 at night....my favorite bird....I’ve never encountered an owl not already seeing me first

In winter when they move to different local and eschew leafless trees and the turkeys roost in it....same quantity....no leaves ...quite a sight with a Q beam

Turkeys are scared of owls....mostly barred owls in my tree but I’ve seen some bigassed horned and some little whet owls and red screech....the latter being an amazing bird....some are really a bright rust red with big ears but a small bird

A big owl will snag little kittens or small dogs same as a hawk or eagles

I know someone lost a teacup yorkie to a barred owl....swooped down on a trail and bam gone into the woods canopy....

I had the same happen with a raccoon.

God, it was the worst thing, ever.

It was in agony.

I turned around and went to my dad’s house and he got out of his bed and killed it for me.

So horrible.

“were sizing up the threat of the cat”

That’s it.
That’s all it was.

Apparently, city folks are more easily amazed than us hicks.

:)

They are wonderfully stupid birds.

The worst summer of my life was tending the 20 turkeys my dad bought for meat.

Every stinking day, I had to watch over those morons.

One evening, I went out to put them back in their pen and there were only 19.

I freaked out.

Searched for hours in the dark with no luck.

Found it the next morning, stuck in a puddle of warm tar that had dripped onto the ground.

What possessed that idiot to snuggle into it, I’ll never know.

We tried everything to get the tar off its feathers, with no success.

Dad finally put it out of its misery.

I still carry the guilt of failing that dumb bird.

Locals brought them in for hunting, by the hundreds.

They’re all over RT 70, flattened.

The state has been ripping out all the underbrush in the wooded medians along 70 and everything that was sheltering in it is now freaked out and confused.

I swung onto the eastbound exit the other day and young tom was running aimlessly in circles, right in the middle of the road.

I blew the horn and spooked it up over the hill in the median, before somebody could run over it.

Last fall, a flock of them went marching up the lane, past my house like some weird parade.

I came face to face with a turkey in Calvary cemetery in Maspeth, Queens, NY. Truely a WTH moment.

I’ve started stalking them. Much more enjoyable than sitting on my ass and calling them in.

I hear them gobble ... grab the shotgun ... and take off after them. I go tree to tree always using a few for cover. Then I step out and BLAM!

My Mossberg is good out to 60 yds + with 3 1/2 inch magnum turkey loads. Make them into turkey tenders with a variety of dipping sauces. Spousal unit loves them.

The coolest local thing right now, is the *hundreds* of buzzards that circle over Greenway Cemetery, at dusk, in Berkeley Springs, WV.

Horrifically awesome.

:D

Years ago, workers for gas companies would look for circling buzzards to locate a large outside gas leak.

If you’re holding a phone vertically while taking a video, a message should come up onscreen saying “HOLD YOUR PHONE SIDEWAYS, DUMMY!”
