Adam Jones walk-off single gives Team USA opening win over Colombia

Adam Jones hit a two-out RBI single in the 10th inning to give the United States a 3-2, walk-off win over Colombia in the 2017 World Baseball Classic at Marlins Park in Miami.

Christian Yelich and Brandon Crawford walked with one out in the 10th inning against Guillermo Moscoso, then the Baltimore Orioles center fielder ended the game with a single to center to score Yelich.

Chicago White Sox ace Jose Quintana was brilliant, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but got nothing to show for it. Quintana had a no-hitter until Crawford singled to right field, snapping a string of 13 straight batters retired by the left-hander.

The single by Crawford was Quintana’s 63rd pitch of the night, two shy of the maximum allowed in the first round of the WBC. Leading 2-0, Colombia brought in Detroit Tigers minor leaguer William Cuevas, who allowed two more hits for a run, then threw a wild pitch, allowing the tying run to score.

Chris Archer was also at the top of his game for Team USA, starting and retiring all 12 batters he faced, striking out three in his four spotless innings.

Colombia scored against Baltimore Orioles reliever Mychal Givens in the fifth inning with three straight two-out doubles by Jesus Valdez, Adrian Sanchez, and Mauricio Ramos.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday, with Colombia battling Canada at 12 p.m. ET and Team USA facing the Dominican Republic at 6:30 p.m.

Archer made the Rays proud, and all together the team made all of us proud. Meanwhile, Japan is blowing up the Asian division, a US-Japan final is not far off.

I saw the in-game interview that Archer did from the dugout. He came across as a well-spoken young man. I was impressed. I don’t follow the American League too closely, but he gained a fan.

I didn’t even think Colombia even played baseball and we barely beat them. That doesn’t bode well for the US.

They were facing Jose Quintana, one of the best pitchers in MLB. Once Quintana left, they started hitting bette. (We had Chris Archer going for USA.)

They have the tough Dominican team Saturday. The Dominicans ran through the tournament undefeated four years ago. And they pounded Canada the other night.

The Dominicans are throwing Edinson Volquez against Marcus Stroman for Team USA.

But this is the best US team we’ve fielded in the Classic. It should be a doozy.

Two teams from each pool move on. Barring something unforeseen, the USA and the DR should be the two from Pool D.

A single with runners on first and third won it in the bottom of the tenth.

These games are fun. I’ve been watching the games out in Asia. I didn’t watch this game as I was watching the Red Sox vs. the Oreos. It’s unfortunate that the games can’t be played when the players are at their best instead of during spring training, but baseball is baseball so I’ll take what I can get.

He's matured a lot in the last two years, a contemporary example of pathos mathei. Last season he threw 233 KOs in 201 innings, and ended up 9-19.

But I do wish they would give Lauren Shehadi more to do.
