This story has been floating around since 2004, but very few people had actually seen the picture of Danny Boy in his Marine dress blues until he put it in his latest book. Dan Rather reminds us of M. Larry Lawrence who, claimed the right to be buried in Arlington because he had had served in the Merchant Marine during WWII and had been injured. In fact, he had avoided the draft and never served.

Back in the day there were over 20 Jarhead Freepers here who took this up and diseected it in TEN MILLION WAYS.
I have my share of issues with W, but he earned his wings and the fighter.
When you go to pilot training, you don't graduate and receive your wings unless you have skills (today, females are a different thing altogether).
Even more so, back in the day, we didn't “give” you a century-series fighter unless you have skills.
If you aren't smart enough, quick enough, lack judgment and do not have “hands” (inherent air sense and skills), you do not fly fighters, especially a century-series fighter. Quickest way to kill yourself is to be put in a century-series single-seat all-weather/day-night fighter. No mistakes allowed.
