Be skeptical of headlines. False news stories often have catchy headlines in all caps with exclamation points. If shocking claims in the headline sound unbelievable, they probably are. Look closely at the URL. A phony or look-alike URL may be a warning sign of false news. Many false news sites mimic authentic news sources by making small changes to the URL. You can go to the site to compare the URL to established sources.

Investigate the source. Ensure that the story is written by a source that you trust with a reputation for accuracy. If the story comes from an unfamiliar organization, check their "About" section to learn more.

Watch for unusual formatting. Many false news sites have misspellings or awkward layouts. Read carefully if you see these signs.

Consider the photos. False news stories often contain manipulated images or videos. Sometimes the photo may be authentic, but taken out of context. You can search for the photo or image to verify where it came from. Inspect the dates. False news stories may contain timelines that make no sense, or event dates that have been altered.

Check the evidence. Check the author's sources to confirm that they are accurate. Lack of evidence or reliance on unnamed experts may indicate a false news story.

Look at other reports. If no other news source is reporting the same story, it may indicate that the story is false. If the story is reported by multiple sources you trust, it's more likely to be true.

Is the story a joke? Sometimes false news stories can be hard to distinguish from humor or satire. Check whether the source is known for parody, and whether the story's details and tone suggest it may be just for fun.

Some stories are intentionally false. Think critically about the stories you read, and only share news that you know to be credible.

If you see a story in News Feed that you believe is false, you can report it to Facebook.

Sorry, I screwed up the headline while posting. It should be “Tips to Spot False News”. I requested to have the moderator edit the title.

Boycott Facebook everyone - they mine ALL of your posts for marketing purposes.

I have never had an account and never intend to. I am a grandmother and in their typical age group - demographic of users and I can assure everyone that one can get along perfectly well without it.

“Sorry—Facebook spies on all of its users.

imho it is a “no go” zone on the web.” They eliminated my cited and referenced short comment about Islam some couple of years ago. No reason given. My comment just disappeared.

Agree. Facebook is the biggest spy of all including NSA, FBI, CIA etc. More and more information coming out in odd places...and just look at how many online sites where you cannot comment about the articles because you are NOT a FaceBook member...and that is unacceptable.

I guess if you want all your comments and original works including poems and photos to be owned by Facebook, then just keep posting with them. Facebook “owns” you once you are a member.

500 years ago they were posting similar articles claiming that there were some religious zealots insisting that the earth was round. They sure nipped that in the bud . . . until they didn’t.

“”””reliance on unnamed experts may indicate a false news story””””

Hey that sounds like nyt/cnn/msnbc/yahoo/abc/nbc/AP

“”””If the story is reported by multiple sources you trust, it’s more likely to be true””””

Ummm, whatt if NYT comes out with an article with “unnamed sources” and the rest of the above list uses NYT as a source. We dealt with that during the whole campaign and it’s still happening.

The left is freaked out by the term ‘fake news’ because it so perfectly describes what - and why- they have been publishing for decades.

Fake news is, of course, a latter-day synonym for propaganda but that P-word will forver conjure images of Goebbels, the Brownshirts and all the Soviet nonsense.

Propaganda sounds baroque and elaborate whereas fake news sounds innocuous and breezy.

But fake news is almost exclusively the province of the left. Anonymous sources often turn out to be no sources at all. Rumor, innuendo and groupthink are regularly published on the front page.

The left tries desperately to claim that conservative sites do it too but what are those sites reporting? Generally they stick closely to facts that can be verified.

The Trump/Russia ‘story’ is an easy example but it may be the best. A total fabrication (more accurately, mass psychosis expressed as a sick revenge fantasy) that has consumed the media for months. Meanwhile, there is ample, corroborated evidence of a sitting president using the powers of his office and the government as a whole to carry out a premeditated, coordinated campaign of spying and dirty tricks. Were the targets Muslim sleeper cells or even Tim McVeigh types? No...billions in taxpayer funded operations and technology were aimed at a patriotic businessman who has lived his life in the public eye for 40 years simply because he wanted the job that Obama would be forced to leave.

There are shedloads of evidence, there are reports and witnesses - EVEN ON THE SIDE OF THE OBAMAITES - yet you are still more likely to hear ‘Russia’ than ‘Obama’ or ‘domestic espionage’ on the news.

A compeition between fact and fiction is no competition at all but Facebook et al would have us believe the are on equal footing and would presume to ‘interpret’ them for us.

I have to say that this statement is so ridiculous that even friends I have of the more liberal persuasion openly mocked it.

And stay away from sites that don't have a comment section after their articles and DEFINITELY don't bother reading articles that have the comment section disabled. The truth is hard to suppress. 99 comments trying to cover for a "fake news" article and 1 truthful comment will stand out like a blazing light. Generally there will be much more information (truthful information) to be had in the comment sections than in the actual article.

It is amazing how technology has killed the gatekeepers– which is a great thing.

When people talk about ‘fake news’ they are more likely talking about news they can’t control.

So many in the media hate Trump because he took their power away. He doesn’t need them and boy, does that piss them off!
