There’s a fascinating book called The Hot House: Life Inside Leavenworth Prison. At the time it was maximum security and the author had unfettered access for a year. Kind of crazy to think about, but he got to know many of the prisoners well and gave accounts of their stories. If I recall correctly one story, a man got released and was given an airline ticket to a city where his sister lived. She wasn’t waiting for him when he arrived and he freaked out and got scared. He committed another crime right then and there. The rest of the stories painted a picture that there exists a population of prisoners that will definitely commit the worst crimes as soon as possible given the chance. This man sounded like one of them. Happy to hear he repented. That’s more than what happened to most of the prisoners I read about in that book.

The Hot House: Life Inside Leavenworth Prison

By Pete Early.

Outstanding author...has a conservative bent...but has been known to bleed from his heart, just a little, once in a while.

Did several other very good topical non-fictions that I would recommend.

Also did a co-write with Newt Gingrich...fiction, but with elements of real events.
