A guy who knew about aerodynamics once commented to me at Pt Mugu airshow about the Mig-19, F-86, and F-18 flying around low. His comment was "talk about dissimilar flight characteristics". I gather in turns and such the planes all handle much different than the others in the formation.
So, keeping station is a piece of work for the pilots.
The F-18 is a carrier based aircraft and has a fairly low stall speed I would think. Those swept back wings on the mig and f-86 are not conducive to low speed flying.
