Argh!! Squirrels!! Window boxes are a disaster. Spinach, cilantro, wildflowers, tomatoes, carrots - all a mess. Replanting and putting cayenne pepper. If that doesn’t do it, Critter Ridder. Last resort, ????.

My coleus plants and yellow and orange marigolds are in the ground. Supposed to rain tonight in Pittsburgh area. Yay!

Got a dog or a friend with dogs? Shed dog hair around the base of the plant helps deter (some) squirrels and rabbits.

Finally some warm weather here near the southern reaches of Puget Sound - green beans, peppers, corn have all sprouted and locally purchased tomato starts haven’t died yet. Supposed to be in the 80’s for a week or so, can’t hurt.

Most seeds like really warm temps to germinate.

OOps. Sorry to hear about that dropped jar. Glad you are doing better. The only produce we have at present is strawberries. Lots of green stuff coming up though.

Any time I have a tomato from the garden, I’m happy. Hubby for some reason bought 2 big tomatoes to slice from the store. ugh. I had to throw away half of the last two.

He makes a sandwich with one slice and sticks the rest in the frig where it deteriorates until I throw it out.

With window boxes, you might be able to rig up some sort of cage that would deter them.

I took an old screen door and laid it over my raised bed - didn’t even have to weight it down much, and it kept them from digging in the beds.

I am looking at edible perennials that have fruit to plant as edible landscape.

Central Konnecticut - got most of the veggies in last Sunday - just about the only sunny day we've had lately.
Disappointed with this year's asparagus, though - on the bright side the garlic looks fantastic.

Happy planting y'all!

I planted some lettuce seeds in one of my containers a few weeks ago. I think I will need to have a microgreen salad to thin out the plants this weekend. They are robust and looking great, but I planted too close together. My dill is FINALLY starting to take off. It’s been slower than I thought it would be. My plants are from seeds I collected from last year so I consider that to be the bigger accomplishment.

It's been unseasonably cool in Central Missouri this week, and a bit damp, but I've managed to get a bit of outdoor work done in spite of all that.

Pops ran the bush hog over the food plot yesterday afternoon. The resident whitetail deer herd is mad about the mowing. The wheat was in milk stage and they'd been gorging on it in the evenings.
The barn swallows are ecstatic. Mowing upsets the bugs and makes a smorgasbord for the birds.

I mowed it down short with the Kubota after work today and scratched it up with the tiller. All I need to do now is spread some sunflower seed and run over it again with the tiller.

If the weather cooperates this weekend I'll set the last of my tomato plants.

The sugar snap peas are making pods finally. Should have a few of those ready to pick over the weekend

I'm on-call so I'll just be hanging around the hacienda for the next few days.

No rain here on the shores of Humboldt Bay for two weeks and we are moving into our typical summer weather pattern… fog in the morning clearing around 10 then fog again in the evening unless the wind blows.. We have to be very selective in the maturity of the varieties we plant especially corn and tomatoes that we start in the greenhouse.. We transplanted 4 double 12 foot rows of Revelation corn from Parks yesterday and will do 2 more rows in a couple of weeks. We have been eating radishes for 2 weeks and I ate the first ripe strawberries today after I hilled up the potatoes for the first time…

What’s the best way to eat/prepare/cook with radishes? I bought some white tip(?) seeds to plant and some other generic-looking radishes that have already started. I like that they move quickly.

I don’t know that I’ve ever had them except sliced in salads.

I wash them, cut to root off, cut the greens off and and eat them with salt in the house or with out salt in the garden. Some varieties can get a little hot and spicy...

Thanks. I was afraid I’d broken a bone or something but I guess not.

We’re getting tons of blueberries just now. Can’t wait to make jam, that’s a ‘this weekend’ project.

What do you do with the strawberries? Fresh or jam?

The strawberries are eaten fresh and jam and pies with rhubarb
