The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.
From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
It has been cool, damp, and rainy this week. Today it warmed up a bit, but was very humid and gloomy. Almost no sun all day.
So I have delayed taking out the winter stuff, especially don't want to mess with taking the lemon tree in and out- it is getting pretty wide for the doorway.
I did some patio clean up today. Will plant the last of the taters, if the ground is dry enough tomorrow.
My battery for the cpap provided 9 hrs. before reaching the minimum advised capacity. So not as much as I had hoped, but good enough to be useful for my purposes as a quick fix for a short - term outage to avoid messing with the gas-powered generator and really long extension cords etc.
Hope all is well with everyone. Prayers up for all. Have a great weekend. God Bless.
Pinging the list.
Rainy and miserable in new England...And i thought Spring had arrived!
Lots of wet weather, here in southern New Hampshire. Barb has the raised beds planted. I have my section tilled. Will plant potatoes next week.
Here
*BUMP* for tomorrow. We had rain most of the day, but we have a LOT on the, ‘To Do List’ for this l-o-n-g weekend.
I’ll report back! *SALUTE* :)
Having fun this year !
I got off to a late start in the season. Apart from this strange medical condition that of course, no one can seem to figure out (I get an excruciating pain when I bend down, lift anything or work on the floor / ground) and Winter not letting it’s grasp off the NEPA area.
I got the greenhouse setup again. It’s taken to year 2 pretty well with only a few bent or broken Chinese parts. I visited the local greenhouse to get some of their sprouted plants (Tomato, broccoli, spinach and some colored peppers) to give me a bit of a boost in the growing season.
Apart from that I also started my first year of not trusting the bagged brands of soil. I worked some top soil from this spring into a box, added Scotts to it (With the lowest levels of stuff) and mixed in some manure from down the road. I’m hoping this soil will treat us better and not lead to any burning at the stem.
the greenhouse is sealed pretty tight from the rabbits and certainly the deer. I also found a nest of juvenile spiders hanging around to keep things clear, and saw that I’m getting some honey bees from the pasture next door this year. And fewer wasps/hornets than other years as well.
So keep calm and garden on, I suppose :)
I think we will likely skip spring and go straight to summer this year.
These last taters are almost 2 months behind schedule here.
Howdy.
Same here, East Tennessee. I planted all my hot weather plants, and it hasn’t been warm since. The beets, corn, chard, and beans have emerged, but nothing else.
Looking forward to it.
Anyone know the germination temperature for basil seeds? I know, I could Google it, but I’m already here and feeling lazy :-) anyway I planted the seeds twice! And nothing is emerging. I planted when it was about 85, and then the next week it drops into the 70s :-(. With tons of rain. I figure either my seeds have washed away or it’s the temperature.
Sounds good to me, except for the strange medical stuff.
It’s been a good garden week and I’m remembering why I love the South. :) Squash plants are happy and starting to bear, and one of my spaghetti squash has decided that it’s apparently the reincarnation of Genghis Khan. Currently it’s 8 feet long, 7 feet wide, and is launching little sneaky expeditionary raids into the next bed over. My Cherokee Purples and cherry tomatoes are blossoming, bush beans are thinking about it, and I cut my first head of broccoli tonight. (and gave the stem to Small Obnoxious Dog, who loves them for some unknown reason).
Remind me about this when I start griping about the heat mid-summer. :D
Enjoy the good weather and days while you can! One thing about the weather is that is will change. LOL
I planted seeds weeks ago but they are taking forever to germinate.
Deep State war has me too distressed to think about gardening right now :(
Went by our local co-op last week and on a lark went out to their live plant section. Found a bunch of sweet potato slips & gave them a home. I was in a hurry and knew the bunch was bigger than 10 slips so maybe 25 slips. Nope. Probably packed as 75 slips with extras. Turns out there were 84 slips in that bunch. For EIGHT DOLLARS. Totally amazed. Got them set out in a marathon session and hopefully we’ll get a return on our investment HA! This makes about 120 slips we have out right now.
Pancake Manna corn is tasseling/silking. Next variety I planted is about a foot high now. And my Virginia Gourdseed corn is just coming up good. I’m trying to stagger my corn plantings according to DTM so I can save seed.
Goliath jalapeno in a container is loaded and we’ve already gotten a couple handfuls from it.
Ginger and turmeric are up and happier with the warmer weather we’ve had lately.
I got a muscadine (Southland) and a cara-cara navel orange tree for mother’s day. We’re going to put the muscadine on a metal arch trellis thing.
Started about 150 tomatoes for fall garden, they’re just starting to get their second leaves. Still have to plant this years butterbeans, blackeyed peas, lady peas and some rice and teff and set out the rest of my winter squash and melons. I dropped a jar on my instep and have been kind of incapacitated for a while. Doing better now though.
Yep. Come mid-June I usually start getting up at 5 so I can garden from 6-8 and then siesta. I don’t mind heat but I *despise* humidity.
But tonight I have had roasted broccoli plus tomatoes with fresh basil from the back yard, so I’m happy. :)
