That is a great analogy! I became a Shellback on 25 March 1993 on board the USS Tripoli with The 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit as a young Sgt. I can still smell that god awful fish sauce the Filipino sailors put on everything.
I already went through Marine Corps boot camp once. Back in the day when they still beat the crap out of you.
Pfft. Two words: Airborne School.
After serving in uniform (US Navy), marrying the love of my life, and raising quite a few kids, I cannot imagine having lived a life in which I would need or even want to fake any of those experiences to feel like a real man. Fake boot camp, fake marriage, and fake whatever else liberals decide to parody next will never replace real holes in a shallow person’s life.
Time to get back to planning my next trip to the range, my next fishing outing, and my next visit with my kids. I don’t need to “revive” my real nature - it never sleeps.
Young men, grow a pair, sign on the dotted line and get PAID to go to boot camp and get in the best shape of your life.
He wasn't to pleased to see me with a copy of his DD 214 and his less than honorable discharge E6 paperwork.
I know people.
I was in the military—loved boot camp—liked the Army for that matter. I also went through 14 years of college, which was life changing. I’ve also done Outward Bound and many other self-discovery/self-improvement programs. Also men’s retreats, solo camping, and hard work! For the most part they were good and useful. Outward Bound was one of the best; it was tough.
But, like I said, it just doesn't sound right.
The threat of Shellback Initiation was so dire that our ship, which was southbound out of Singapore for Sydney, broke a main reduction gear about 50 miles north of the equator and we had to be towed back for repairs never making it over the line. There was a pretty good ratio of Pollywogs in the crew.
Sorry, folks, but inhaling vaseline can seriously injure the lungs and lead to premature death. Not cool.
