Rusty Rahm was perched on a stool, his legs tethered to the piece of furniture and his arms bound behind him. A man stuffed a wad of gauze into Rahm’s mouth and taped it shut, then shoved Vaseline up his nostrils.

He sat like that for more than an hour as an EMT watched.

“Obviously I was having trouble breathing at that point,” said Rahm, a 47-year-old entrepreneur who owns seven different companies and lives in Kansas City, Mo.

The Democrat prosecutor who went after Tom Delay got caught up in one of these goofy rings... he was one of bunch of local notables paying to hang out in the woods drumming and playing with raw chickens.

"Paying to be tortured???"

No unheard of, but usually it involves a chick dressed in black leather and wielding a riding crop.

Well, for many of us it used to be called boot camp and if you were lucky, Chief’s Initiation, but I digress...

Sounds pretty damned submissive to me. Nothing manly about this. And 10 to 1, the proprietor has gotta be a homo.

If one is a pussy, one must take extreme measures to TRY to become a man.

Do they still do the sweat baths after the debacle at Sedona?

A man would really have to be whipped down to go to one of these “retreats”.

28 years ago, I went to a boot camp for men. It was called Parris Island.

The submissive has the power.

“LOL! Yeah. Two words: Shellback initiation...”

So you do know what I’m talking about...Good times, great memories, lifelong friends. Friends that got me back to the ship when I was, *ahem*, not feeling well in all kinds of foreign ports and I did the same for them...

I don’t think suffocation builds character.

I’ll take a pass.

Same here, shellbacks! We crossed the equator twice; the first time, 90+ percent of the crew were pollywogs, so the few officers, chiefs and senior enlisteds had a lot of fun hazing us. It wasn't too bad. But then, about a month or two later, we crossed AGAIN, and by then about 90+ of the crew were shellbacks, with just a few of the uninitiated up for the 'treatment'...boy, did I feel sorry for them! February-April 1980, USS William H. Standley, CG-32...isn't it funny? I hated every minute of it at the time and couldn't wait to get out, but now, looking back, it was the best time of my life!

I don’t believe you can pay someone to make you comfortable with yourself and the decisions you’ve made in life. Or in the case of this silliness, to punish you for the mistakes you’ve made in some glamorized ritual.

I skimmed the article. I didn’t see a mention of God in it.

“I’ve been a United States Marine. Combat action, Iraq and Afghanistan,” said William Toadvine,...“Warrior Week was a tough application process. It was the first time I had a man tell me I was a coward.”

I've known more than a few people, including FReepers right here, who have seen plenty of combat. I've never once had them introduce themselves as "So-and-So, Combat Veteran". Doesn't pass the sniff test.

I'd also put people who have the need to introduce themselves as "Manly" in the same category as those who introduce themselves as "honest" or "smart". People who really are, don't have the need to.

But then, the "journalist" writing this piece couldn't find their own butt with a map and a compass, so I should take it from where it comes, I suppose.

As for the guy who's running the camp, he's pretty creative. He ID'd a list of sucker millenials and is getting rich off it.
