Hi all! Normally I don't post a Vanity like this unless its important and it may well be...
I have been getting quite a bit of email from viewers of my blog who hail from the great lakes area of Duluth minnesota and Superior Wisconsin.
The stories I've heard about this place is astounding. Besides being the birthplace of Lorenzo Music, the voice of Garfield the cat, its a cesspit of liberalism and socialism as well as teeming with racism and white supremacy.
stories ranging from school kids dressed in black face make up to Antifa hooligans attacking bystanders for whatever reason.
Essentially, from what I've heard this place is a cross hybrid between Berkeley CA and Sparta Mississippi.
I might even visit on my vacation time. Well maybe not...
But I want to write about it. I mean they say the GOP is racist, I think like 80% of the population is Democrat and while most cities have white flight, this town's got black flight.
Any freepers from the great lakes got any info I'd appreciate it.
Not EVERYONE from Minnesota is a left-wing loon.
My MIL and two of her sisters were with us here in Montana last week.
All three of ‘em love Trump.
But it’s frickin’ freezing in Duluth, hence the nickname: Manitscolda!
It’s where Jeno Paulucci had Jimmy Hoffa turned into pizza topping.
Now you know.
Duluth is the gateway to the Iron Range, which historically has been strong DFL/union country.
They have a great beer there in WI from New Glarus Brewery called Spotted Cow! At least the area you are concerned with is away from Madison.
Nice place to visit. After living in SC I could never live up there. My wife is from MN and used to go to Duluth in the summer. Still really really cold up there in the winter
Still likely very heavy democrat old style labor thinking.
Superior has more bars per capita than any other US city. There’s nothing serious to do for most people in the extreme
winter than drink. But there is the Medal of Honor fighter pilot, Richard Bong, Museum.
Forget Duluth. For scenic beauty, other than the Duluth harbor bridge and the diaphram foghorn,(beeeeooohhhh) that’s it.
The drive between Two Harbors just north of Duluth and Thunder Bay, Ontario is beautiful. Nice lakeside resorts and motels too. The Drive between Virginia, MN and Ely is worth it too.
Politics leave much to be desired in the sister cities.
Also, the Northern Lights are often magnificent in the dead of winter.
Duluth's economy used to be based on Iron Ore mined in the arrowhead region of the state, and shipped through the Great Lakes (see Gordon Lightfoot's The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald which details the true story of an 800-ft freighter which sinks in a November gale).
The ethnic makeup is Scanadhoovian so they tend to be Socialist True Believers like the European Swedes and such.
Also the so-called "Duluth Model" for "women good, men bad" used by counselors and social workers originated there.
One good point is the annual MS 150 charity ride for multiple sclerosis, originates there and goes south to the Minneapolis Metro area. I've ridden in that a number of times.
And there used to be billboards in the Minneapolis Metro area, with a photo of a panoramic view of Lake Superior, and the caption, "Fire Your Therapist." Sitting on the rocky shores can be very soothing.
My wife is from Duluth, and I have an aunt in Superior. It is an area of blue-collar working-class people, many of whom are staunch liberals. Not everyone is a leftie, but they tend to predominate. Don’t go there for the politics, if you’re a conservative. But it is a beautiful area — at least the North Shore is. Duluth itself is kind of a dump.
Superior’s worse.
Can’t speak to Superior but Door County is gorgeous. Outside of Door County I only know Milwaukee which struck me as sort of faded and a shadow of it’s former self. Waterfront art museum was nice with outstanding architecture, lots of beer but other than that, bleh on Milwaukee. Go to Door County.
We go to see the big lift bridge and Maritime Museum the port and watch the iron ore ships come in. The Electric Fetus is a cool place for vinyl records. Birthplace (Hibbing) of Bob Zimmerman (Dylan). Mothers is a good place to get a beer. And don’t forget the Bong Museum in Superior!
Also, on the black flight issue, Duluth’s St. Louis County is as large as Massachusetts. When I lived there some time ago I could go weeks, perhaps months without seeing a single black person. Lots of Finns and Norwegians though.
Exactly, Iron Range is more DNC Strong Arm than anything else.
Old Democrat voters who still think GOP is made up of rich people.
Its a blue collar area with several colleges mixed in. That’s where the strong liberal streak comes in. The city streets are falling apart because of the weather and the council spends on social programs rather than infrastructure. The harbor area and Canal Park are fun. There’s a nice walking trail by the lake. Surrounding area is gorgeous.
Starting from the straits of Mackinaw, enter the UP and take US 2 west. Visit the Fort at Mackinaw City, Mackinac Island, and then go west on US 2. Visit Fayette park-a ghost town and then the BIG Springs at near Manistique, then west to Nama Junction and visit the ghost town there. Then to Rapid river and north on US 41 to Marquette. Then west/north on 41 through to Lanse and north to Copper Harbor past Houghton and Hancock. Back down and follow M26 through Painsdale and catch the Porcupine Mtns park. Then down M26/45 to Bruces Crossing then west towards Superior/Duluth if you still want to go there.
Another way is skip going north to Marquette on 41 and travel west on US 2 through Escanaba and to Iron Mountain Mich and visit the iron Mining Museum before you get to the “PIT” that US 2 crosses-the museum is to the left and up the hill across from the quik stop gas station just after downtown Iron Mountain. BTW, the pit is a caved in mine shaft you will cross on US 2. Then, continue on US 2 west, through Florence WI (the home of Major Charles White Whittlesey of lost battalion fame WW 1) and then continue west and catch whatever you like till you get to Superior and Duluth.
You take the former, and you will never get to Duluth and wouldnt care to. Marquette is a bastion of liberlism, the rest of the UP is strongly conservative since LOGGING is the number one industry.
The call it the land of 10,ooo akes....it ought to be the land of 10 trillion mosquitoes. You’ll get eaten alive up there.
....You are either on a pension, on welfare, or you have moved someplace else...
Sad to say that at one time in that entire area common topics of conversation have been, “ Were you approved for welfare yet?” and, “How’s the poaching been?”
