The saga began in May, just days after Trump fired Comey, who was then leading an investigation into contacts before and after the election between the president's campaign and Russian officials. Trump disputed Comet's version of a January dinner during which Comey said Trump had asked for a pledge of loyalty.
The president responded with an unmistakable threat, tweeting that Comey "better hope that there are no 'tapes' of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!"
But what appears to have started as an angry, or perhaps mischievous missive triggered a series of consequences each weightier than the last. Ultimately the cryptic comment resulted in the appointment of a special counsel who is now reportedly investigating Trump's own actions in a probe that could dog his presidency for the foreseeable future.
At a Senate committee hearing this month, Comey suggested that the president's reference to possible recordings inspired him to disclose to the media through an intermediary a memo he had written of an Oval Office conversation from February. In that meeting, according to the memo, Trump asked Comey to consider dropping an investigation into the former national security adviser, Michael Flynn.
One week after the memo was disclosed, the Justice Department appointed Robert Mueller as special counsel to take over the investigation into contacts between Russia and the Trump political campaign.
The absence of recordings almost certainly elevates in significance to investigators the notes made by Comey at the time...

What nonsense. Comey was illegally leaking his own version of discussions with the President regarding FBI business and with his tweet Trump made Comey think twice about making up shiite out of whole cloth.
The maneuver to get a Special Counsel was in the works by the Deep State all along. Is there any doubt that Comey and Mueller wrote the open-ended and illegal jurisdiction of the Special Counsel that failed to even cite a crime committed, and got Rosenstein to pull the trigger at the most opportune moment?
That's the opposite of Comey who continuously appears to dissect things to his advantage.
If Trump had tapes, he more than likely wouldn't have tweeted that tweet.
Still ticked that Comey leaked and got the special council which was the aim of the leak.
Still ticked that Comey wouldn't publicize that Trump was NOT a target of the investigation.
Looks like a “Finely Nuanced” statement to me. The kind the press would applaud as sheer genius if uttered by a Clinton.
Trump-hating lunatic Jonah Goldberg was absolutely beside himself with outrage on Special Report tonight that Trump’s tweet that Trump himself did not tape the conversation might be read to suggest that the Deep State could have been surveilling Trump in the White House.
Actually, one way of reading the Tweet is that Trump did not want to presume to speak for Comey, as to whether Comey had recorded the conversation.
Regardless of and even with Comey’s self serving memos, they still have Zip, Zero, Zilch, Nada.

Nope. That’s why they fired him while he was 3,000 miles away. Grabbed his laptop, cleared out his desk, and it all went to Sessions. This is why Trump did what he did. Bannon and such know who Comey is, a Clinton stooge that was leaking and being used by Podesta for obstruction or perjury convictions against Trump. Trump’s way ahead of them, and signalling that Sessions can release Comey’s tapes of Trump.

True, but Comey recorded the conversation and the Secret Service confiscated his recording device as he attempted to leave the White House.
(There have been many rumors and discussions of Obama bugging the White House before he left, like this discussion. Maybe Obama has tapes of that Comey/Trump encounter...)
