Barry Goldwater noted in The Conscience of a Conservative that American freedom has always depended, to an extent, on what is happening beyond our shores. The behavior of these nation-states is not insignificant, especially when they are out to create global problems rather than solve them. It would be a grave error to allow them to accrue power that matches their ambition, of course.

Is from the Goldwater quote, not that he was in a position to define the correct state of the world.
I’ll concede he was a giant.
It’s time to debate the “extent”. I believe most of America leans farther toward isolationism, than toward interventionism.
