HINGHAM As police cars rolled into his pristine suburban neighborhood last Saturday night, past the sprawling Colonials and manicured lawns, and as dozens of officers from across the region surrounded his home, Russell Reeves begged them again and again to back off.
In a bedroom upstairs his son Austin, 26, was distraught over a breakup. He had told his family he needed time alone. With him was his dog and his 9 mm handgun. If you pressure him, if he feels cornered, Reeves said he told the police, this will end with Austin killing himself.
The police listened and nodded and took notes in their notebooks, according to Reeves. And yet, more officers kept coming. Some wore camouflage and carried rifles. They set up bright lights to shine onto the house and drove a military-style vehicle into the backyard. Eventually, they broke seven upstairs windows so a mounted camera could look inside for Austin.
Please, the frightened father says he asked them, why cant you just let him go to sleep?

Concerned about his state of mind, the woman called police at 9:19 p.m., asking them to check on his welfare.

Never. Do. This.
Long story.
Predictable ending.
There is no situation that cannot be made worse unless you involve the police.
Times have changed.
The police were for the most part true heroes in times of lawlessness.
Our Culture has made a necessity of change that good people do not understand. Be very careful before you bring authority into your life. You may not like it.
If possible, go to their operation and express your complaints.
Were that my son the cops involved would be looking over their shoulders every single day of their soon to be much shorter lives.

Could it be...Saudi bribery of politicians?
I think you meant the opposite.
The police are not social workers, therapists, marriage counselors, or off hours clergy. There is no private matter that will not be made much worse if you call for government representatives with guns.

If Dad wanted him left alone, HE should have left him alone. Instead they called the police. Then then begged police NOT to intervene. Where to start?

The “kid” woulda been way safer living in his pari’s basement.
I live in Hingham and think that fat police chief is a jerk. They’re a bunch of overpaid, underworked lazy busybodies. Toss in a couple of bored SWAT teams with truly nothing better to do and I’d have shot someone myself.
I don't know. If the ex-girlfriend was really tired of dealing with a mentally unstable ex boyfriend with a gun....
And the cops didn't even shoot the dog when they had the chance.
The ex-girlfriend called the cops.
I think it was the mom who called the police. And to be fair the cops didn’t shoot him. He pulled the trigger himself. He killed himself.
Now maybe the police exacerbated the situation. But really this guy was suicidall. He would have offed himself sooner or later.
In recent years this is exactly my SOP. Avoid involving the cops unless I actually see a significant crime in progress and am 100% certain of the circumstances. That hasn’t happened and isn’t likely to. “See something, say something” is asking for trouble.
For example...you see someone jump your neighbor’s fence during the daytime. What if it’s their college age son, the cable guy, the gardener, a neighbor retrieving their 10 year olds ball, etc. etc.. Cops come and shoot fence jumper without giving him a chance to explain, not a stretch in today’s world.
no... you just didn’t understand.
“Cops come and shoot fence jumper without giving him a chance to explain, not a stretch in todays world.”
Not only is it not a stretch, it’s pretty much exactly what happened to that woman in Minnesota, only she herself had called the cops because she thought she heard a prowler.
Then she comes out in her pajamas to meet the cops and the one guy pumps her full of lead.
No, I don’t understand why he did that.
They’re not “operators” either although they like to play them on the streets of our cities. I watch them with their procedures and tactics (using the word loosely) that all seem to be geared to taking out one bad actor, and I think to myself “If SHTF and these clowns ever run into a coordinated team of 0311 and 11B veterans there will be nothing but dead cops littering the streets.”
