Following the collisions of guided-missile destroyers USS John S. McCain (DDG-56) and USS Fitzgerald (DDG-62) with merchant ships, the grounding of guided-missile cruiser USS Antietam (CG-54) and collision between USS Lake Champlain (CG-57) and South Korean fishing vessel, the Navy has begun a 60-day review, according to a Thursday memo outlining the scope of the review.

These are four of the most sophisticated, expense surface combatants the Navy has. There may be a problem connecting all of them, but you can be sure social engineering will never be identified as a possible common thread.

.
The problem is not social engineering.

There appears to be some kind of radar spoofing going on.

This is waaaay more serious than it may appear.

Yep - and it will become racist and intolerant to foster an ethos that protects our ships/warriors.

A few days ago more than one person posted that it is not *spoofing* — they gave a name for it, funny word, and said it is nothing new. ????

Before reading anything else or posting anything on the collision, please read the article Root Causes at usni.gov. I’m not good at linking. Somebody may be able to link it for me.

Really? Okay, I’ll play along. Did they tamper with the tankers running lights? Did they also tamper with the Navy’s night vision goggles? What did the Navy’s men on watch see? I huge cargo ship with running lights can be seen for miles. Forget radar and riddle that.

This isn’t casual or racial or anything to do with identity politics.

This one’s bad.

The most likely to be true comment comes from the former commandeer of the USS Cole.

Thanks for the link.

The “optics” when Lippold talks of his 16 weeks of training in RI vs the DVD for on board training is most damning.

Don’t understand the mentioned std 3 man watch.
Bow, stern, and mid-ship? Where was the mid-ship watch stationed to watch both port and starboard? And how the hell can a single sailor effectively stand watch. In a crow’s nest swiveling 360°? Color me baffled.

I am ready to give the benefit of the doubt to ship's captain.

Was the ship warned of possible ships turning into them along standard routes?

Is it possible civilian ships are trying to cause collisions?

Has the fleet leadership alerted ships to this condition?

Yes, fire the Admiral, get attention to this issue.

You have to drop this idiotic and breathless conspiracy crap. It's poor training and derelection of duty. From the bridge of a ship you can see the mastheads of a large merchant at 20 nm. At night the loom of the lights is much further than that. You can easily see the whole ship at further than 10nm and the turning radius of a warship is something like 500 yds, meaning the diameter of a turning circle is 1/2 nm, plenty of maneuverability for any modestly competent deck officer to avoid a merchant on a straight course at moderate speed.

You might, but I doubt the Navy will.

Umm, some of the same navigation lines used by our ICBM’s to get to their target... Would hate to ‘send off a nuke’ to Pyongyang and have it hit San Francisco... Best case someone is messing with international navigation system on a small scale. Worse case we’ve been totally disarmed.

https://www.newscientist.com/article/2143499-ships-fooled-in-gps-spoofing-attack-suggest-russian-cyberweapon/

“On 22 June, the US Maritime Administration filed a seemingly bland incident report. The master of a ship off the Russian port of Novorossiysk had discovered his GPS put him in the wrong spot – more than 32 kilometres inland, at Gelendzhik Airport.”

“After checking the navigation equipment was working properly, the captain contacted other nearby ships. Their AIS traces – signals from the automatic identification system used to track vessels – placed them all at the same airport. At least 20 ships were affected.”

we know the tracks of the ships that collided with Fitzgerald and McCain. They stayed on constant course and speed throughout the period of time when collision was a possibility.

The Navy does not give a benefit of a doubt to the CO of a ship, and there is little doubt in the mind of anyone knowledgeable about ship operations that the OOD and directly or derivatively the CO are absolutely responsible for these collisions.

No competent conning officer allows a naval vessel to be in reach of collision with his ship. The one exception is navigating in a narrow channel where maneuverability is restricted. That is a circumstance that does not apply here.

No. What Lippold said was we’ve gone from having three lookouts on a ship to one. @ 2:20 of the clip.

Regarding the “standard 3 man watch,” the former commander of the USS Cole said during an interview on WMAL radio this week:

There is the officer of the deck (OOD) plus three look-outs. One scans from the bow and along port side toward the stern, the second scans from the bow and along starboard side toward the stern, and the third is located on the stern and watches a 180 degree arc from his position. The first two are located on the bridge along with the OOD.
