For the edification of anyone who might have missed the phenomenon in the swirl of the election, the “creepy clown” sightings were of people dressed as clowns, often with distorted halloween-clown masks, who would step out of wooded areas or lurk on the shoulder of unpopulated stretches of road, and who would make threatening gestures at passers-by. On a few occasions, they pursued people, and on a few occasions (some overlap) they would brandish weapons (usually knives).
The roadside sightings were usually too far off the main road for the driver to do anything about, and IIRC the “clown” would usually only make themselves visible briefly just as a car was passing i.e. you couldn’t see them too far ahead.
