Fabio Fognini has been kicked out of the US Open after verbally abusing a female umpire during his first round singles match.
The Italian was due to play in the third round of the doubles but he has been withdrawn from that contest and provisionally suspended from competition.
Fognini had already been handed a series of fines totalling £18,500 after he lost his temper during a loss to fellow countryman Stefano Travaglia. The 30-year-old was heard using insulting language towards Swedish official Louise Engzell and was handed three separate fines the largest sanction coming to a whopping £11,581.
And he has now been thrown out of Flushing Meadows. Pursuant to the Grand Slam Code of Conduct, Article III Q and Article IV A and B, Fabio Fognini is hereby provisionally suspended from further participation in the US Open pending a Final Determination whether a Major Offense has been committed during his first round singles match, a statement read.
The provisional suspension is with immediate effect and, therefore, Mr Fognini has been withdrawn from his upcoming doubles match. There will be no further public comment concerning this matter until the Major Offense process is complete.
“Just take your balls and leave.”
Why do they mention it’s a female umpire?
Curious about what exactly happened. Did he insult her with abusive language towards her as a woman?
Just wondering. When we see run ins with referees and umpires in other sports, they never say that so and so was a black referee, accosted by a white player; the subject never comes up. So wondering what her being a woman has to do with the story.
Maybe they’re all trying one-up McEnroe by surpassing his career fine tally?
Sexualizing it, yup.
All the media knows:
EVERYTHING is related to sex, race, age, whatever categorized stuff divided people into the type of categories that the liberal bureacratic/Hollywood mindset finds handy to make the wide world smaller and therefore more comprehensible, more manipulable.
That explains a lot.
sorry, but if this guy had been muzzie or black, he would not have been thrown out.
The narrative only works if he’s a honky.
The only way he’d have been more kick-outAble would have been if he’d have had really blonde hair, or something.
That’s the kick-out express.
Did the paper just assume the umpire’s gender? Is that still legal?
Flushed out of Flushing. Who does he think he is, MacEnroe
Hey, here’s a good place where you can call me a village idiot..!
I got her all tee’d up, and everything, for ya..!
The real Fabio would’ve gotten a pass.
If insults of a sexual nature were needed to kick these spoiled pompous asses out of a game so be it. The tournament managers should have started with Connors and McEnroe years ago.
I don’t recall Serena Williams getting kicked out for saying....
I will shove this ball down your gd throat.
You may be right, but that wasn’t what I meant.
“Hey, heres a good place where you can call me a village idiot..!”
I apologize for exaggerating. You’re not really that useful.
That was pretty good..!
Fognini with a light tomato sauce and pram cheese?
Oops,I thought this was a cooking thread.
1. McEnroe era....no “tolerance!” culture....not kicked out
2. Fabio era.. ...huge “tolerance!” culture...kicked out
I don’t get it.
The pattern to me seems to be as society discusses tolerance, the less likely they are to actually practice it.
So tolerance is actually sort of like a Pet Rock, something looked at but not used.
Or maybe tolerance is like fairies dancing on the head of a pin, a concept contemplated but never put into practice.
