I noticed the same thing on some T-shirts from India. Maybe I should have washed them before wearing.

Frankenfabrics. It’s not just cotton (or cotton so-called). There’s a certain third world ick to much of it.
Same with paper products and packaging. Recycled (i.e. degraded). Recycled... from what?
Get to scratching.
It’ll eventually go away with a wash or two. MAYBE......
I learned from an employee at a department store that it wasn’t uncommon for clothes to be permeated with formaldehyde. I guess it was for preservation purposes in far-away warehouses in third-world countries. She said always wash new clothes. This was 25 years ago, so I don’t know if this holds true.
I thank goodness they don’t carry my sizes. Haband for me.
Always wash new clothing that comes from overseas esp.India/Pakistan/Bangladesh. Always. Different story though with T’s from Israel. You put them on and right away you’re lusting for matzos and pickled herring.
I’m one of those people who has to wash everything before I can comfortably wear it. If I spend the afternoon at Macy’s looking at their shirts, pants or jackets, I will have to spend a couple of minutes washing my hands and wrists before I can move on with the day. In short, I’m hyperallergenic to certain fabric when prepared in certain ways.
As somebody said here, maybe the stores spray their rack garments with something to keep wrinkles off. I still haven’t figured out what it is.
When clothing comes to my home that I have ordered online, my routine is to wear plastic gloves while removing the wrapping and all the labels, then dump the new garment directly into the wash, never having to touch it at all.
Maybe their antiquated cotton gin ain’t separatin’ the seeds from the cotton fibers.

If you watch the sales good you can pick up clothing in good department stores for about the same price you get junk at Walmart .

Yes, I cant buy clothes there anymore. The last batch of t-shirts went from me wearing those disgusting things straight to the rag bag. I never even bothered wash them. Thanks globalism.
It’s not the country of origin of your cotton T that makes it scratchy or rough, you can get scratchy American cotton tees as well, in fact more often than not. What makes the “hand” of a cotton t-shirt (how it feels on your skin) is the cotton processing method. There are three common ways to turn rough cotton into thread/yarn.
The first is called Open Ended Carding, this is cheapest and the most common way and results in rougher feeling shirts. The loose cotton fibers are tangled and bent all sorts of ways. The carding process takes a a few dozen and wraps them with one fiber perpendicularly so they are a straight bundle. The second method is Ring Spun cotton. In this method all of the cotton fibers are spun, softened and straightened out before making the thread. These are your soft cotton shirts. The third and premium method is Combed Ring Spun cotton, the same as ring spun but the fibers are combed first to removed broken pieces and small fibers making for the softest smoothest cotton.
So you can get a t-shirt you will love that is made in India, Pakistan or China, The #3, #4, #1 producers of cotton (we’re #2 and export most of ours) or one you hate, it all depends on the specs. Walmart is about low price and so though they sell some nice fabric cotton T’s (usually the womens ones), the bulk of what they sell will be carded cotton.

I am not a fan of Walmart tho I do a lot of shopping there simply because there is not much else I can do.
A few weeks ago, they put a bunch of pull over shirts on clearance. They resemble the old Lacoste shirts. I have trouble finding my size, 3XL.
They were marked down to $3 and that was an even better deal as the 3XL are always $2 extra.
The shirts are very comfortable and look nice. I just pulled mine off and here is what is printed on the inside collar.
“Since 1972” “Faded Glory” 3XL/3XG (54-56). “Made in Pakistan” “100% Cotton”.
Well the Pakistan connection is not good but then it was extremely cheap, has been washed a few times already and is color fast. Yes it really does look good and is comfortable. Pretty hard to beat for $3.
Are you using dryer sheets. I’ve always considered them a form of fiberglass.
I wouldn’t worry too much. I’m sure they don’t have any nasty skin diseases over there.
Soak your shirts in saltwater for 3 days. Then rinse well & wash normally.
