That’s why an entry to the state fee might come in handy.

They’re going down the tubes and they want to charge people to enter? No thanks.

CT, MA & RI need to be merged into a single State.

Yeah, well it would keep people like me from taking the wrong turn off the hiway and winding up in E. STL after 11:30 p.m.!

Terrible place to stop and ask for directions after dark.

Can they do that ? I thought the Feds prohibit states or the federal government from establishing tolls on existing interstate highways ?

In other words, he wants to put up signs saying “Please stay out of Missouri”.

That was my first thought - followed closely by, "What if every state instituted this lunacy?" Why don't we just erect parapets and breastworks along every border and go back to being feudal states?

New Jersey tolls you to LEAVE...seriously, every bridge and tunnel is charged outbound from NJ only.

I always thought our state (with no toll roads) should charge a toll to drive through, but only to vehicles licensed in those states that charge US to drive on the interstates in their states. IL, IN, OH, PA, NY, FL, KS are the ones I’m familiar with. Probably plenty more.

I took the exit into E Stl off the interstate by mistake in 1972. It was a scene right out of National Lampoon’s Vacation. Even back then, there was at least one no-go zone for non-blacks. Man, I wish we had picked our own cotton.

Same thing happened to me in January 1974 when I was driving from LAX to Ft Monmouth, NJ. Construction and somehow I wound up on city streets. I got back on that freeway so fast. Note: I was a Marine going to an Army school. Just wanted to clarify!

I can go along with that.

This is not as off the wall as it sounds. I am living in Germany and a variation of this is used in a couple of countries here.

Switzerland, Austria, and a couple of other European countries have a motorway charge system. It only affects controlled access highways (motorways), not surface streets or rural roads. In switzerland, drivers buy a vignette (sticker) annually for an annual cost of CHF 40 ($41.38). Visitors buy theirs just before or upon entering Switzerland.

Large vehicles (RVs, Semis, etc...) pay an extra charge based upon weight.

If you are caught using the motorway without one on your windshield, it is a fine of CHF 200 ($206.74). Plus heavier penalties for forgery, alteration, etc...

To try it in the US would require resolving legal and constitutional questions, but it may be worth exploring. Is this a better or worse solution than confiscatory gas taxes?
