Missouri looking at changes to what people pay for license plates
StL today ^ | 11 SEPT 2017 | Mark Schlinkmann

Owners of fuel-efficient vehicles could pay higher vehicle registration fees than those who own gas guzzlers under a potential change being studied by Missouri state officials.

Another idea, he said at the governor’s conference, is imposing tolls on drivers at entrances to the state — as an alternative to tolling much of Interstate 70 in the state as MoDOT has studied in the past.

“The whole idea is to capture (fees from) people traveling through our state that use our roads that don’t pay anything” now, Messenger said in an interview.

However, McKenna said tolling only at entrances to the state would violate the U.S. Constitution’s interstate commerce clause.

Toll booths on the interstate?

How will they ever be used for emergency runways?

What would Ike say about this plan?

And what if I don't drive high miles on my high mileage car.

In other words, he wants to put up signs saying “Please stay out of Missouri”.

Missouri should be renamed “Misery” (which is how I usually pronounce it)

You can thank Obola’s Cash for Clunkheads for getting gas-guzzlers off the market and forcing people into little cars.

Government always wants things both ways.

They want you drive fuel-efficient cars, but they want you to pay the same amount of taxes or more.

I took the exit into E Stl off the interstate by mistake in 1972. It was a scene right out of National Lampoon’s Vacation. Even back then, there was at least one no-go zone for non-blacks. Man, I wish we had picked our own cotton.

One of the many reasons we formed the Union over two centuries ago was to avoid tolls and tariffs between states.

Aside from that observation, Congress has plenary power over Interstate Commerce. A reasonable user fee, or toll is one thing. An entry fee is a totally different thing.

Back in the logical daze, fees were weight based as it’s the weight of a vehicle that “damages” the road.

On doing a little googling...

Today, the 46,730-mile Interstate System includes approximately 2,900 miles of turnpikes.

Ugh.

CT has been talking about border tolls for a while now. Too many people drive thru and don’t stop to buy our overpriced gas.
