In the true story of the Von Trapp Family Singers, not the fiction of the movie Sound of Music, the family first took a tour of Europe to get away from Hitler and the Nazis.
When that tour of Europe was done, they decided to come to America.
Maria made the mistake (by accident) of saying they intened to stay in America and were not just visiting.
Basically, it was the policy at that time to detain/imprison people wanting to enter the US at Ellis Island.
This was hard especially for Maria as she had a small baby at that time.
Compare how she was treated (a well respected performer) versus the DACA folks.
We were in Stowe on a hiking and sightseeing tour this summer. It’s absolutely gorgeous country. We visited the Trappe Lodge and it is spectacular. It is very pricey and it seems the family is doing quite well.
No more amnesties! No DACA!
This is just another sob sister story modified to support today’s liberal narrative.
I saw an interview with one of the sons some years ago.
He said they didn’t climb over the Alps to escape the Nazis;
he said they simply boarded a train in Austria.
It was 1939. Before France was invaded and before we knew much about Nazi death camps. People at the time probably felt that European refugees should not be our problem.
There was a movie I saw when I was a kid about them, released wayyyy before “the Sound of Music”, that was about their escape and living in New England. I think they ran a hotel.
Just for the record, there weren't any 'Nazi death camps' in 1939. They were all post-Wannsee.
Correct. There were concentration camps for political prisoners starting around 1933, but extermination camps came quite a bit later when the SS took over most of them.
Either we have a country or we don’t. These so-called “Dreamers” come from a country that would imprison or deport illegal immigrants so fast they wouldn’t know how they landed on their asses, so it’s hypocritical and dishonest to act as if it’s just the United States being mean or some other such BS.
