Your list is a good one, although I could go along with a “path” as long as it is a straight and narrow one. For example, it could require at least 2 years active military or 5 years National Guard service, meeting all requirements for citizenship, paying all taxes, and zero tolerance for any legal misconduct, civil or criminal. Walk that line, and you can swear the oath - AFTER receiving an honorable discharge or equivalent.

AFAIK, illegal foreign citizens are, by law, not permitted to serve in the US military.
