Actually, since you want to talk what ifs, if the MSM had not gone after Gary Hart for screwing a woman not his wife on his boat (”changing his mind about offshore drilling” I believe a fellow Democrat Senator put it) there would have been no Clinton.
Or rather, what led to Clinton was NOT that they reported about Hart but that afterward a myth of sorts seems to have taken root that only if they hadn’t reported on his cheating heart then maybe the charismatic Senator would have won the primary, then the general, and we been spared a Republican administration.
It was arguably for the cause of not repeating this mistake that a few influential journalist decided to carry water for the next charismatic cheating Dem to come along: Bill Clinton.
Thing is, Clinton was dirty in ways before which Hart paled and once they started protecting him in one way they soon found they had to in others too. He owned them.
And selling their souls seemed to have the desired result.
The new myth was a return of an old one: that the press could direct electoral outcomes.
They just had to defend the creeps who now owned their sorry asses no matter what, and the creeps knew it.
The next time around lots more were on board ... and more ever since.
The long descent from simply being hostile to the nature of the Republic as it was intended to be, what the Constitution authorized, slowly became the current madness. Not just the media but the left as a whole, like some man dying of cancer claiming it’s just a rash.
People, you see, are not like proverbial frogs who lack the ability to excuse away discomfort and will jump from frying pans before they die. No, people can make excuses, make defenses, talk of how this is better now that it’s proverbially hotter ... they stay right where they are till they are dead, dead, dead.
Frankly, humans are the ONLY creatures who would ever be in danger from raising oceans. Everything else would move inland if able. People would stay right where they are till one day bloop, bloop, bloop....

IIRC correctly Hart challenged the media to investigate his “affair.” They did and they caught his ass or should I say hers on his lap. You can’t buy stupid at that strength. He got what he deserved.

Well, if you want to play THAT game, if Reagan had won the nomination instead of Ford back in 1975, he would have defeated Carter in the General Election, which means that Iran would probably still be a strong US Ally, there would have been no Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the entire middle east would be a much quieter place, and nobody would have ever heard about Obama.

I believe that the EVIL that was/is the Bushes, the Clintons and the 0bamas would have been visited upon America in one form or another.
