The two then allegedly went to the clearance section, where they took out the devices from their boxes and placed clearance price tags on them.
The pair then proceeded to a self-checkout counter, where they allegedly scanned the clearance barcodes and paid a total of $3.70. The electronics cost a total $1,825.20.
According to the arrest affidavit, the 25-year-old said, "I am just trying to get gifts for my son that I cannot afford. The computer is for my husband. Since he just got me a Coach purse, I figured he deserved something nice as well.

I worked retail many years ago. People would take bra boxes and panties in the dressing room, change out of their filthy stuff, put the new stuff on and place their dirty stuff back in the boxes.
Sometimes those things were pretty raw smelling if you know what I mean.
I don’t try clothes on in the stores so do return stuff every now and then. At some stores they take the high priced stuff and do a check on the tag to see if it matches with the merchandise. I asked why they did it and they said that people switch tags. It would never occur to me to do something like that and there needs to be a punishment for someone who does that, intentionally stealing from the store. And a ‘don’t do that again’ is not enough. This attitude is what has emboldened the moral decay in our society.
1. They caught a guy with one of those huge outdoor trashcans packed full of everything from electronics to medicine. Close to $5,000 worth as I recall. He paid for the empty trashcan, then told the cashier he forgot something and went back into the store, after he filled up the trashcan he handed the door greeter the original receipt, the only thing that tipped her off she said was that he had packed the plastic trashcan so full, the sides were literally bulging out in place.
2. This elderly man would come to the store about once a week, go back to the shoe section, put on a brand new pair of shoes, put his old shoes in the box, tear off the tags and walk out the door. Funny thing was, they new exactly who was doing it, but could never catch him in act.
3. This was back when both music and video games came in those little square "CD jewel boxes". Close to 100 of the newest games and music CD were coming up missing every week. Loss Prevention knew it was internal theft because they were missing directly from "the cage" (the backroom storage area for high value, small items) and they also knew it had to be happening during nightly restocking as that was the only time the cage was open. They tried everything, pat down searches, going through lunch boxes etc. and nothing. Then one evening one of the loss prevention officers noticed that this one stockman always had a couple of foil wrapped sandwiches left in his luchbox at the end of every shift. Sure enough, when he told him to open the foil, he found five CD cases between two slices of bread, so it would feel like a sandwich if anybody casually squeezed it.
Interesting! We've had self-checkout lanes for a few years and this W-M just had a huge million dollar refurb. The new self-checkout lanes are now HUGE.
Things are different here in GreenAcres! I have seen W-M employees pursue shoplifters here and call the SO.
Arrest hubby for the coach purse, too. Throw them both in jail for this Christmas and the next few Christmases. The son will be better off without them.
I was at Lowe’s chatting with the paint guy. He told me people will return cans of paint full of water.
Unfortunately she is white, so she’s still fair game for prosecution (i.e., low risk arresting her).
“which was probably caught when exiting the store and the employee there looked at the receipt and saw clearance cover on a computer”
More likely they were looking from above (via cameras) and were trying to figure out why a computer rang up as 99 cents.
My daughter works the service desk at a Meijer store. (large Midwest chain)
She caught someone returning large boxes of Tide detergent. I think they had sand or something like that in them.
Piss...But it was only 99 cents!
I am just trying to get gifts for my son that I cannot afford.
I need to go out and find my son a yacht for $7.50. That is all I can afford.
I don’t understand why they arrested her. She used the exact same reasoning as is offered for why we should permit millions of illegals to stay unchallenged and even supported in our country. She just wanted a better life for herself and her family.
Some women would place it between their knees and walk out paying nothing
Generally items are cross checked with weights against prices and item
Go ahead, you deserve it.
Those women are impressive. I saw an investigative report that showed surveillance video of one lady who put something like a stand mixer in its box between her legs and walked out. You couldn't tell by the way she walked. It was unreal. Another lady was in a liquor store and managed to fit almost 20 bottles of booze on her person and walk out. At that point, it's a finely honed craft.
Back 50 years ago or so I watched an adult relative do this at a store. Back then it was easier to switch price tags. I was appalled. I had no idea an adult would actually do such a thing.
