There is a great disturbance in the Force: Angry Star Wars fans are petitioning Disney to discard The Last Jedi, the eighth installment in the Skywalker saga released last Friday, and remake the film.

More than 7,000 fans have signed a Change.org petition titled “Have Disney strike Star Wars Episode VIII from the official canon” as of Tuesday morning, after being disappointed with writer-director Rian Johnson’s continuation of the beloved space saga. Warning: Spoilers ahead.

most of the fans are mad because the maker of the film loaded it up with all sorts of overt social warrior theology. all the Male are cowering wimps or hot headed idiots that act before thinking.

if you are wealthy you must be evil and have slave children that slave away at a casino race track.

the film script ignores concepts established in privies scripts.

the movie plays around with the iconography of the empire strikes back rearranging the visuals from that movie expecting fans to love the fact that visually it reminds them of empire strikes back.

I myself was tempted to petition Disney to never let the producer or writer touch a star wars script again.

The real problem with this film, is the CONCEPTION problem... that being Star Wars is no longer the eternal battle of Good vs Evil... but is now some ephemeral fog of shades of grey and nuances....

I read somewhere that Lucas' initial vision was to have it "turn to grey". The whole "he is the one to bring balance to the force" thing was a prelude to the force becoming one - no obvious good or evil.

This is a secular humanist wet dream. Imagine no religion. No moral judgments. People are what they are and you just have to accept it.

Episode 9 will be a SJW, LGBTQRSXLZ, snowflake orgy. The oppressed will rise. Rich people will be vanquished. There will be no "good" or "evil". There will still be right or wrong, but that is subjective in the eyes of the ruling class, which will be the formerly oppressed.

They might as well call episode 9 - The Communist Revolution.

“It’s actually better than the original, IMHO.”

You can say that again :-) ... I used to call that album Metallica’s downfall ... now that designation has moved to the black album thanks to the remix :-) (I like the old school metal sound ... never cared for their 90s on stuff save their latest album ... plus I’m more of a Megadeth fan :-) ).

“But what I AM saying is that Hollywood should take note that if they take their audience for granted,”

I don’t think we are that far away from a “movie studio in your garage” kind of software package that will allow anyone to make anything for a fraction of the Hollywood price. Once that catches on and the software tools plummet in price, Hollywood as we know it is done for.

I don’t see actors pulling down huge dollars in the near future nor do I see the need for practical sets. You can render almost anything today that looks acceptable ... that includes people. Add another decade’s worth of technological advances to the mix and you’ll have a tough time distinguishing “real” from “rendered”. Why would you pay someone millions when you can generate the character out of thin air for next to nothing (in a relative sense ... artists need to be paid and good ones are VERY hard to come by)?

Have you seen “Star Trek Continues”? It’s basically a new season of the old Star Trek series. It is frigging GOOD. Yes, the actors look nothing like their counterparts on the old series, but the stories and sets are fantastic. I think shows/films developed like that are the way things are going to be in the very near future. STC relies on older practical sets and the like, but it was developed on a tight budget and shows what people can make on their own independent of Hollywood.

I wonder if Star War nerds understand that when a military group plans for anything such as an attack, ship movement; it takes more than a couple of minutes. In these movies, they have a few people standing over a planning board just chit chatting, and then they go in and blow up a major base.

I read the reviews by people on IMDB, some of the worst reviews I ever read in my life for a movie, some people saying it was so bad that it made them cry LOL!

I learned long ago that reviews to a new Star Wars movie which are written in the first month are subject to superfan overreaction. Can be way too positive (i.e. stuff like "OMG, this is a masterpeice! Maybe the best Star Wars film ever!" written about the Phantom Menace) or way too negative ("George Lucas raped my childhood with this dreck!").

I'm a casual fan, not that emotionally invested. I wait for fans like me to write reviews, about two to four weeks after release is about when you can really see what's what.

The problem with this, is it doesn’t sell.... Folks go to be entertained, we witness shades of grey and nuance every day in the real world.... So as you move that direction you lose your audience which is there for escapism.

Balance is one thing, but if you notice, even this is left behind.... Snopes comments how Rei is the light rising up to counter Kylo, yet Kylo’s motivations are not simply the same as the one dimensional evil Snopes....

This is a fundamental shift from a binary world view into another... and that’s where the film loses a good bit of its established audience..... Not the execution issues... but there in that moment, while it was obviously building to that through the whole film, in that moment, in that scene, there is no doubt, good vs evil is not what this is going to be about... and with that, the entire reason most folks have enjoyed the series.... comes crashing down silently as SW now just becomes another muddled mess of stand for nothing fall for anything.

With advances in digital technologies, Hollywood should be a little worried about the nerds. Notwithstanding the sanctity of property rights, these nerds CAN recut a film to their liking, upload it to a site, and THAT version may take hold and trump the "original" version.

The Star Trek franchise recently came down like a bag of hammers on a fan film production because (1) their preview looked like the best Star Trek people had seen in years and (2) it looked better than the "subscription" show they were getting off the drawing boards. They put in all sorts of draconian rules that basically make it impossible to do fan productions anymore.

As to the quality of the promo that started that, judge for yourself: Prelude to Axenar

yet they can’t afford to buy a yellow pad and write out a good script?

Star Wars movies have scripts? I thought they were just comprised of Harrison Ford with that one expression he emotes with. Is Chewy doing his emoting, now that ol’ Harry’s gone?
