The ancestral home of poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge's family which was also used by Oliver Cromwell as he built his Civil War army has gone on the market for offers over £7m.

The Chanters House in Ottery St Mary, Devon, was owned by the Coleridge family from the late 18th century until 2006 and still houses the impressive Coleridge book collection in the grand 70ft library.

The stunning property - on the market with Strutt & Parker - comes with more than 21 acres and earns an income thanks to renewable energy sources which the current owners have installed.

Did they have a well or a faucet?

Of course, other people like other styles. Flintstones-style homes built out of caves could be yours for $3.5million

A house that big could become like an albatross.

And then there's the thing about living in a glass house. I knew a couple that did. She described having to hide in her wrap around kitchen when a salesman came to the door.

Amazing see-through house where everything (even the staircase) is made of GLASS

That’s really cool, but I can’t imagine living in it, not to mention the dead birds lying all around from splatting into all that glass.

And if you can't afford a whole house, you can always build a shed.

Man builds replica of Titanic cabin using wood and mementos from its sister ship Olympic... in his garden shed

Or, if desperate, you could live in a tree.

Now that's how to enjoy the high life: The luxury tree houses that sell for £250,000

Then there's the western theme. This is my favorite. Feel of a log cabin.

Having been in the military(Air Force)over there back in the late 80’s I would hate to see the utility bills for that house, I say that as the utilities back then were pretty high over there compared to the United States and that was like 30 years or so ago. I really hate to them now, I doubt if those solar panels even come close to paying half of the utility bills.

A cousin of mine had a house like that. Since she died they’re selling, but haven’t heard if it sold. I heard the upkeep costs were STAGGERING. Three separate dining rooms. (The money didn’t go down our branch of the family) First time I met her I realized she hadn’t given me the street number on the main drag in Newport. Turns out that’s because she was the whole block. VERY active Republican.

>>dead birds

YUCK! Never thought of that. My friend’s house was deep in CT woods, so they probably couldn’t get up to speed enough to splat.

Wasn’t it considered very British for the house to be really cold and the inhabitants freeze?

Yes a very impressive library. I don’t think I saw a paperback in the collection. (My library has plenty of them)

I grew up in a seventies contemporary with huge Pella windows on all four sides and remember well how dismayed my amateur birdwatcher parents were about that. The only thing that really worked was hanging black flying owl cutouts in front of them, which spoiled both the looks of the house and the view, it was at the foot of a mountain with a very nice view of large granite cliffs above. Even with that, come mating season the male Cardinals would beat their brains out against their reflection in those windows.

I have noticed in home like that there are no chairs or couches that you can just flop onto.
