What do Freepers think of George Fox U. (Vanity)

A niece announced yesterday that she intends to be a doctor, and has chosen George Fox University (GFU) for her Pre-Med. Over the past five years she has gone from wanting to be a zoo keeper, to a nurse, to an ER nurse and now a doctor.

Does anyone know anything about George Fox U.? I know that GFU is an expensive, private, christian school, but that's about it.

The University was founded as a Quaker college, but today is not so choosy. However, they are still a conservative christian school. For instance, in 2014 they sought and received a Title IX exemption from transgender students in the residential dorms.

An upside is that my niece has received a scholarship large enough to cover on-campus residence for the first year, to be renewed if she keeps her grades up. The campus, in Newberg, Or, is a 90-minute drive from home, so she can bring her laundry home on weekends.

A downside is that it's only 25 miles from Portland.

If anybody has information on George Fox, I would appreciate hearing from you. My niece has been ace-ing college courses for two years now, so I have no concern about her academics.

I should say that my niece is currently 17, and a high school senior.

I cant say I know what it is like today but wouldn’t it be cheaper to go to a state school for premed and just keep your head down and mouth shut. I suppose if more expensive private school is not an issue it is OK. I do know that Admissions Comittees discount grades at some private schools. And with the state schools loaded with libtards it might actually be easier to get good grades nowadays.

I am a retired MD. With what I see ahead in healthcare I cant imagine why anyone would want it.

A small school, perhaps fairly well-known regionally. A high acceptance rate, meaning it is not terribly selective, but having said that, Christian colleges tend to have a self-selecting and self-limiting group of students who apply i.e.) very different applicant pool than a large state University. I don’t know the culture of this school, so can’t comment on that.

Nearly any college can be worthwhile - IF the student is serious and gets top grades, and they don’t burden themselves with debt and fees aren’t ridiculous. Of course, you don’t want a leftist propaganda factory either. Look into the schools’s own website and local news for info on that.

Many top medical schools look at grades achieved by a student in their pre-med/undergraduate courses. I’ve heard it argued that getting an A average at a school like George Fox, looks better on a med-school application than a C+ from Stanford.

Again, it depends how serous the child is, and how much $$ the in fact have to pay. Make sure the child tours the campus (with a parent), sits in on some classes, meets other students there, listens to faculty and admissions comments - do all that and you’ll know if it is for her.

I don't have anything about the University but Dave Ramsey has a lot to say about becoming a Doctor financially.

Most take Student loans out the Whazoo. Some do not make it through and are left with Huge Student Loans.

1)Therefore her job, right now, is to apply for every Scholarship under the Sun.

2) She needs to Contact Employers that might pay for her Education. Think Hospitals/Military/Others for being willing to work for the afterwards.

3) Think of working while Going through college - at the very least Online/Part time.

4) Think of a college that is less expensive: George Fox may be one of them as compared with you know who.

Student Loans are nasty these days; not bankruptable. So stay away from them as much as possible.

Godspeed her Education if she is serious.

At least two family members have attended George Fox and loved it.

My daughter, who is 16, has interviewed/visited several colleges/universities in Oregon and has also fallen in love with George Fox. At least with respect to the staff that deals with potential incoming staff(from her perspective), they were the best. According to her, of all the Christian Universities she has visited, they showed the most focus on a Christ-centered education.

I should also add from a Parent’s perspective, if we can scrape together the money via scholarships, this will probably be the university we send her to.

A friend from our Bible Study a decade ago is now a professor there. I would not say she is a conservative Christian, although she might consider herself that. She did unfriend me on FB during Trump discussions, so I am quite sure she did not vote for him. May have marched in the Pussy Walk, that wouldn’t surprise me.

Our son tried several colleges before he settled on one close to home and commuted from here. It allowed him to focus on his school work to the exclusion of ‘Campus Fun.’

If the student intends to go into Primary Care a military scholarship is fine. Don’t make the mistake of thinking the military will help you specialize like I did.

I know two sets of parents who have kids at George Fox. Supposedly great academics.

College is college however.....if a kid wants to screw up it won’t matter where they go to school.

Any top school of a state school system,
get top grades,
apply to your state university’s Medical school.
Lots of scholarship $$$$ for very good students.

Give the kid the $100-150K in cash they saved you when they graduate.

Unless money is no object; but for most, that’s the path of least resistance.

Unless of course, the student is a LGBTQXYZ123 obese dwarf muslim gender fluid disabled non-caucasian from a sub-group of historically marginalized persons.
Then it doesn’t matter, you get in without an application, go for free, attend no classes, take no tests, get no grades and finish in a year with accolades from all progressive quarters.

When your daughter is considering medical schools, she should consider the medical school of the armed forces.
I know several graduates and they have done well. Below is some information from their home page. Note: NO TUITION!

The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine (USU) is situated on the grounds of the world class Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Students at USU represent the amazing diversity of America and come from all geographic, socioeconomic, racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds. USU does not ask for your money— just your service. All students study tuition free and are paid a $64,000 or higher salary to train as future physicians and medical leaders. USU features an extensive year-round curriculum that focuses on medical science, disease prevention, health promotion, and leadership training that is nearly 700 hours longer than those found at other U.S. medical schools.

So please, check us out. Your journey to military medicine starts here!

Ny niece did consider the military path, but she is severely hypo-thyroid, and is disqualified on medical grounds.

At least she has already been accepted by George Fox, with a partial scholarship. I’ve done some more research, and found that GFU pre-med is well regarded by medical schools.

Best of luck to your daughter. You and she may want to check out the Public Health Service. They provide all
the medical care on Indian Reservations and until about 1981 provided the health care for merchant mariners and even ran a couple of hospitals for mariners. I know a doctor that worked in the Tucson area for the PHS. I suspect there is some healthy tuition reimbursement available.

I think it is great that she is going all in for an MD. My sister, a nurse, always regretted not going for her MD. She’s a physician’s assistant now. Sooooooo smart.
