BEIJINGChinas chronically high trade surplus with the U.S. hit a record level in 2017, adding fuel to Trump administration criticisms about Chinese trade practices just as it weighs a range of penalties and other actions to curb the imbalance.
Stronger growth in the U.S. pushed up demand for Chinese exports, expanding Chinas trade surplus in goods by 10% to $275.8 billion last year, even as its overall trade surplus shrank 17%, according to Chinese customs data released Friday.
The trade deficit with China is the U.S.s largest with any trading partner and 2017s is the biggest with China in the nearly five decades for which records exist. Fridays announcement of the 2017 imbalance comes amid tensions over trade between Washington and Beijing that are already so strained that officials on both sides say a cycle of tit-for-tat measures, if not an outright trade war, is a risk.

It is my observation, that both political parties, and all the American business establishment are all sold out to China.
Maybe not. But Trump seems COMPLETELY like the only guy who was saying even one word about China during the campaign, and now Bannon was forced out - it seems the sell-out crowd is running things.
Trump. This is not why I voted for you.
You are not doing ONE THING, to improve things yet.

More leverage on China to get North Korea in line.
No tariffs. Just step up customs inspections and hold up the shipments. Jam the flow.
We need companies coming back and/or starting up here....not in China.
Why not tariffs?
Just asking an honest question.
Why not?
We need a tariff and we need it now.
Yes tariffs, no income taxes.

Patience, grasshopper :-)
But the big thing remains....We're the consumers. That's money from you and me that they're racking in. How many "Made in China" items did you buy this year.

I try to not buy mexico/foreign produce either.

Go into any Walmart in America.
Seems like EVERYTHING is from China. I see the same thing in Target, in K-Mart, in any electronics store, in any furniture store, in any tool store.
I know, there is a small amount, from other places. But not a lot.
We really, really, have a serious problem at the moment.
In my view.
Tariffs need to be a part of a greater equalization of fair trade program.
If workers in other countries are getting screwed, impose tariffs and level the playing field. Don’t use tariffs for diplomacy.
Do use beuracrcy. Create it on purpose. It works immedately.
Note to the WSJ: Nice try.
If our coast guard starts inspecting ships and customs inspecting each item imported, the flow will jam quickly.
We don’t need to hire more customs inspectors. Just make the ships and trucks wait in line until we get to them.
I would be sort of ok with buying imports if I knew a proper duty/tariff was applied to the price to compensate for the differences in the standard of living between shitholes and the USA.
Figure out which Chinese officials are affiliated with which manufacturing facilities and start with those goods.
