Why is D.C. needed?

Posted on 01/17/2018 5:49:50 PM PST by A Cyrenian

This is a serious question.

The people in congress were elected by the people in their home states. Why are they collecting their pay from the federal level?

Why can't we send everyone in D.C. back to their home states and have the states pay for their salary, benefits, staff, etc.?

With all of the advances in communication, why do they need to be in D.C.

In my own job, we have meetings with other members using Skype, Outlook, or even gotomeeting.

It's time to disband D.C.

Good question. Especially when the swamp is irreparably corrupt & illegitimate. Loyal to the marxist left.

They refuse to protect our borders from foreign invaders...

I thought that was in the Constitution somewhere... specifies pay for Congress.

If that's true then fine. Doesn't say anything about living in D.C. nor their staff.

Send them home.

Fine. When do we go to work on it? I say after Trump is reelected unless we get 60 Senate seats beforehand. House should meet in a deep blue state. Let the lobbyists follow.

The NFL Draft was moved around-long overdue. Move Congress from one state to the next. Take it to the people.

I grew up in the DC area. I’m 100% in favor of moving entire gov’t agencies to other states.

Exactly.
There’s no need for them to be any particular place as long as a secure network is up.

A tiny step that direction would be congress critters voting even when they are back in their districts.

To borrow a phrase from Glenn Reynolds, it exists to "provide opportunities for graft."

After the first terrorist nuke explodes anywhere in the world, D.C. will quickly depopulate.

Because it is actually in the Constitution that they get paid by the Feds.

I think that ought to be changed, too, but you’d need an amendment.

DC was a beautiful city. Now it is like East Berlin. Let’s send our rulers back home or to a safe bunker in West Virginia and take our city back.

D.C. is a buffer to keep the South and the Brits from kicking the North’s ass time and again.

Washington DC is indeed useless and America is still America w/o the swamp.

With ALL the communications options available today, there is no reason at all that our representatives can’t stay in their districts and conference and vote remotely. However, they then would have to associate with their constituents, and that idea terrifies them. DC has provided them a buffer between themselves and those they represent.

DC bar owners and prostitutes would also suffer greatly from this very logical evolution.

This is NOT 1789 when Congressmen had to take their carriages to meet in DC.

DC itself is one of the biggest problems we have. If the lobbyists want to lobby, let them by-God have to fly to the home district of the rep they want to lobby.

Excellent suggestion! We can start with moving staffers out to the places that are impacted by their decisions. Once that’s complete, set up Virtual DC and clear the place out. Knock down the office buildings and build more monuments and museums.

Telecons and Skype and NetMeeting sound nice, but they are no substitute for a large personal meeting. Hell, they’re not much fun with 10 people.
