Yes, but days and places like this make it all worthwhile. Here in Mo terry, Santa Cruz, and San Mateo Counties, it’s ‘chokes and ‘sprouts (Brussels, that is).

“sent this to my Humboldt surfing son.”

I grew up around Prick. Does your son ever surf up There? A lot do.

What a shame such a beautiful state was overrun with illegals and liberals.

Yep, spent many an hour lounging away out there during my mini retirement in the mid-naughts. Absolutely beautiful shoreline.

"About 15 years ago my wife and I were at Carmel during this week in January. There was a surfing contest, and helicopters were dropping the surfers into the water a mile or so off shore. Even those pros couldn’t get past the incoming waves.

I believe it was Mavericks where tow-in by jet ski was first initiated. Could have been elsewhere, but it is now the norm for monster waves. I also believe that Laird Hamilton (big wave living legend) was the first to try it or some guys at Mavericks. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Probably the biggest reason I remain in Silicon Valley.

I think that you are correct.

This was further south at Carmel. Originally, the helicopters were there to just take videos and photos. As noted the waves were so high, the copters took the surfers out and dropped them between waves with their boards.

"As noted the waves were so high, the copters took the surfers out and dropped them between waves with their boards."

I remember that era, but the surfers still had problems dropping into those monsters even on their big guns, as used to be called. I was a surfer as far back as the early 60's with a 8'11 Bing around Redondo, Hermosa, and Manhatten beaches of the southbay of LA. Do you remember Dewey Webber and Jacobs boards?

I started again while Navy and surfed Ocean and Pacific beaches in San Diego. I was a better snow skier and never got into the radical cutbacks and such, but did tear up the slopes at Bear Mountain.

"A couple guys reported they tried to get out to the breaks, but couldn’t make it."

Of course they couldn't. Mavericks big days require jet ski tow-in around the sets. Smaller days are possible, but extremely difficult to get past the breakers.
