The damage to the church is done! The damage to the country is done! It can’t be recovered from until the wound is debrided and cleansed. Whether constitutional crises, riots, burning buildings, whatever, bring them on. It’s war time.

If that hypothetical about the church was true, what would be the damage to the church if it was not revealed? Eventually the truth comes out. If a horrible truth comes out later, like the church pedophile scandal, it is made all the worse by the years of coverup of the initial crime. Hiding a crime causes the disease to spread with coverup on top of coverup. Better to clean out the infection immediately.

The real damage to any church is in this sort of thing remaining secret.
The damage to the real church of Christ (those filled with the Holy Spirit) would be minimal. The damage to the Catholic church with all of it’s traditions, doctrines, and papal worship would be damaged enormously.
